Laptop owners, what brand is your favorite

I'm looking to get a laptop coming up here fairly soon for work and I'd like to know what laptops you guys recommend. Personal stories, how a friend's held up, what you liked when you saw it, good reviews you read, whatever.

Thanks,
Jason

So far I've liked the looks of the Dell Inspiron 600m.

i like DELL
most pp here like IBM though

well if you want best bang for buck its DELL, if money is not an issue, i wud probably agree IBM,

IBM for a PC (great warranty, service, and amazing construction).
If I had the cash I'd get an iBook though. 😀

I agree...

although im really happy with my dell...got it 2 months ago...for some reason every once in a while i have a problem with my hard drive, maybe they just didnt tighten it enough since it only happens after i carry it in my bag for a while

so i called them and they are sending me a new one...

toshiba i think is the best.

edit:

after much deliberation, i finally reccommended my father get my sister a toshiba laptop with the centrino + upgraded wireless package. when she got it, it's an impressive laptop... i  toshiba, now.

y didnt you make a poll. WHY! thats what the whole thing is there for. Its not that hard either. Damn noobs.

^Yup^

I've had a Dell Inspiron for 2 years now and not one problem. I have experience with IBM's too and if I could have afforded one I would have probably gone with that.

lol u still coulda have left your preferance

and id go with IBM

I had a dell laptop, which died on christmas day (3 years old). It was a decent laptop, but felt very cheap. I havent really messed with the newer dells though. To replace that dell, I bought an emachines laptop. So far I am very impressed with it, as it feels well built. Got it at best buy for 999 AR.

The specs:
Athlon XP-M 2400+
512 DDR Ram
15.4 widescreen
Radeon IGP 320
60 gig hd
dvd/cd-rw combo drive
802.11g

I got the 3 year best buy warrenty just in case. I believe Emachines is a company thats trying to turn themselves around. However, if you dont feel comfortable enough with them yet, I would go with a toshiba.

Apple Powerbooks are damn sexy. I'm still torn between that and an IBM.

Apple's are sexy, but i find it disconcerting to have it as my primary PC, if all you wanna do is email and spreadsheet and the chic factor, its a perfect fit

for a poweruser its leaves a lot to be desired

ofcourse if all you wanna use it for is school then ya, Powerbooks/ibook fits the bill

toshiba sucks

dell is good when it's cheap

compaq x1000 is a great deal right now and sexy

apple and ibm are expensive but good

12" powerbook. sony has a 12" one too.. but i haven't seen any other 12" notebooks that are appealing to me. granted, all i could afford was a refurb ibook...

With a few exceptions (IBM, APPLE, etc), your name brand lappy is made by the same no name oems that construct the generic notebooks found on pricewatch.

If you know what you're doing, get one without an OS such as Sager, etc... and save hundreds...

Otherwise, the Medion Athlon XP 5 pounder with dvd/cdrw they sell at bb or cc is always nice for about 6-700...

IBM. No contest. IBM's could cost twice what they do and they would still be worth it. I made sure to get a ThinkPad when I went to college. It's almost 4 years old now and it's still more solid than my sister's brand new Dell. There is no flex in the IBM's chassis at all, not even in the keyboard. My sister's Dell might as well be made of overcooked pasta. IBM has a far superior keyboard on their ThinkPads too, the Dell's is smaller and not centered. There's just no comparison.

IBMs are solid machines, but overpriced, ugly, and they tend to make or add too many features proprietary in hw/sw/firmware...

Mine has a few things that are controlled in the BIOS (all the special function keys such as volume or screen brightness) but nothing that requires any driver beyond what Windows automatically detects and installs. That's the beauty of having the special controls in the BIOS, they function regardless of what OS you're running. It's Sony that is notorious for requiring special software to use their special function buttons.
