My Fop-38 surface is not all that smooth and I use artic silver so I thought I would lap it.

Few Questions.

The FOP-38 in annodized, lapping will remove this, is this a problem, what is the purpose of the annodize?

Will I need to start off with a coarse paper, will the bottom of the HS be concave/convex, then work up to a finer grit?

Any tips?

When I took the fan of the fop 38 (changed it for the ys-tech 60mm like on the fop-32) the clip came out and I can't remeber which way round it goes back, will it matter?
Does the end with the movable clip go at the end with the notch in the bottom of the HS or the other end?

PS. Why do the letters written on the chip indent themself in the bottom of the heatsink? Is tis normal, I can read the writing on the bottom of the HS. Are they raised up?

Many thanks.

use something absolutly flat, like a small mirror or something glass. Wrap sandpaper around it and grind away. It helps to have coarse paper. Point is to lap the entire area, not just the contact area HSF-CPU. When you see the area being smoothened and flattened, proceed with a fine paper. You should be able to work up mirror-like appearance.

What I like to use is the bathroom counter top. It's fake marble stuff, nice and wide. I wet a sheet of 340 wet/dry, front and back. I wet the back to keep it stuck to the counter top.
I then wet the HS, lay it down solid and start swirling it in circular motions. I have went to 600 after that. But the surface seems really nice, even after the 340. I keep the paper rinsed off. I make sure and hold even pressure on the HS when I'm working it.

Most of the time I'm worn out after the 340, so that's where it stops.
Good luck on getting through that annodized layer... YOU'LL NEED IT! ;)
