Landover Baptist

Why is it that a site so derogatory to one group gets by when it would be considered terrible if it was directed towards another group? Sites comprable to the Landover Baptist site that target minority racial groups, for example, would never be tolerated by the majority of people who are amused by Landover. A site satirizing stereotypes of blacks or gays would never be as widely accepted by the members of this forum as Landover is.

As a Christian, I see where Landover is so outlandish that some parts can be funny. The disdain and outright hatred that the site broadcasts towards Christians begins to scare me though. It's quite easy to write it off as humor and leave it be, but I find it comprable to Nazi propaganda against Jews. That propaganda was distributed in a society where Jews were free, as Christians are free now, and ended in a horrific fashion.

I view hate as hate, no matter what group it is directed at. Why is the hatred towards Christians that is expressed at Landover more acceptable than hatred directed at any other religious or racial group? Perpetuating inaccurate stereotypes is never a healthy thing for a culture, no matter what the subject of the stereotypes is.

I'm interested to hear responses in defense of Landover by those who both enjoy the site and find it harmless. I'm also interested to hear the response of those who err on the side of Landover's bitterness towards Christianity and find the hate justified.

Because it's popular and cool to bash Christians. It's very rare that you'll see anyone bashing Islam or Hinduism but it's ever-so-popular and P.C. to bash Christians and Jews. Look at it this way: why would Satan want to ridicule you and steer you away from following a false religion such as Islam or Hinduism if you're already going down the path to hell? It's those who are on the right path that are attacked and attempted to be "run off the road", if you will.
The above is just my opinion. If you have a problem with it, go eat some ice cream and you'll feel much better 🙂

I don't see how it is bashing christianity as a whole. It is taking the outlandish views of one group of over-the-top holier-than-thou individuals and pushing it just far enough over the edge that anyone with half a brain would be able to see that the society they are mocking is just as disturbing as the portrayal. In addition, they're just plain funny.

Maybe the problem then is that I don't have confidence that the majority of internet users have half a brain. 🙂

Well, then for once I'll agree with FlyerMax2k3:

Because it's popular and cool to bash Christians.

I'll bite.

I find Landover Baptist slightly funny. I do not visit it frequently, or even rarely at that. I tolerate/accept the site based on many reasons, one being freedom of speech. There is a marked difference between holding opinions about groups and acting violently against a group. To equivocate LandoverBaptist to WWII Nazi Germany is pure fallacy (slippery slope), and implies more than you may have intended.

I think we also must clear up the difference between "mainstream" christians and fundamentalist baptists (those parodied in LandoverBaptist, again another reason to tolerate the speech(parody)). Mainstream christianity has been strongly affected by society, while fundamentalism harks back to the ignorant ages, sometimes back to stoning as an acceptable way to deal with those who broke the "ten commandments". I think you understand that this difference exists, but am looking to feel like a victim.

Yes, you're the majority, you're so stiffled and put down by a secular minority! </sarcasm> If you can so easily dismiss Islam or Hindu or any of the many other religions, maybe you should discount your own in the same way! =Þ

Probably because they are funny in the way they Lampoon Fund A Mental Case Christians. If you aren't a member of one of the Whacko Sects why should it bother you?

I also think that it is more clever to give someone a different perspective on something and then let them come to their own conclusions than to just come right out and say something directly. People tend to be repulsed by others preaching at them. Humor is a more effective and indirect way to get a point across.

Correct that most internet users don't have half a brain... but it doesn't change the fact that the site it parodying fundamentalist baptists and not mainstream christianity.

I'm sorry sir, I am *not* the majority. I don't belong to the group of people labeled as "Christians". The modern day religion known as Christianity is apostate. Most "Christians" go to church on sunday and that's the extent of their Christianity.

You make a great point. A large section of people have closed their minds and are hardly receptive to discussion (let alone preaching). Thus pointing out the extremes in a humorous light may make people question their own beliefs (and either force a change or re-inforce them, doesn't matter which, but at least they thought about it)

The "Wacko Sects" can vary by definition. I don't find Landover to be representative of the majority of fundamental Christians, as it represents itself, and as some people take it to be.

If you'll note, my comparison to Nazi propoganda had to do with the early stages of Nazi Germany, before there was violence against Jews. That didn't come immediately from nowhere. There had to be build-up to it, and "innocent" portrayals of Jews as outside the mainstream, much as Landover portrays Christian fundamentalists as wackos, was undoubtedly part of the build up.

Why is hatred towards any group, even fundamentalist "wackos", acceptable?

Correct. It is an apostate... since modern society has moved on past ignorant beliefs such as stoning for "coveting thy neighbor's possessions" (also wife, but she was regarded as a possession back then), or the other first seven of the ten commandments.

Yes, again, the SLIPPERY SLOPE argument. Please refer to any information about FALLACIES.

As for hatred, I'd rather classify LandoverBaptist as a parody site, but then again, I don't surf it and have only viewed it twice.

Please show me the Commandment which speaks of stoning or punishment of any kind. I'm referring to the Commandments spoken of in Exodus Chapter 20.
