My landlords fear me. They're very nice people but know if they cross me I will make them pay. The easiest way to do that: tell everyone what the going rent is now. It's gone down so much I bet they'd lose thousands in the renegotiations.

Good work though, Kev1n! :D

Glad to hear that you stuck it to them. Landlords can make some nice extra cash by just taking the security deposit.

<--- lucky he gets his rent for free

Wtf is wrong with your toilet? Is that foil?

I'm positive that she is just taking your deposit for her own use. Her contraction about having to contact the regional office, and then letting you "off the hook" without doing so is a huge clue.

That's what I suspected too. Good call. What bugged me was that she said that, and later said that she didn't lie. I secretly hope the check doesn't come so I can take up a good chunk of her time in small claims.

Would it be wrong to post flyers of my experience at every door in the complex, even if she did return my money?

Edit: P.S: The picture of the toilet was taken mid-flush.

Make 100% sure everything on those fliers is true and can be proved to be true or you're screwed.

Good job. When I left, I took pictures as well. I cleaned that place soo well. In the end, I got shafted *5* bux, because my fridge could have been cleaner. Oh well, didn't argue about that! :D

The key is, move out a few days before you clean. That way you have time, and can really give everything a good inspection. I moved out a week before my contract ended.

Good point. Maybe I can make it anonymous and abstract the dollar amounts so it can't be proven that I posted them? :)

If you live out your security deposit, no worries... a teacher I had in high school told me about that, and my brother always did it before he got his house. Security deposit is normally one month's rent... so just don't pay your last month of rent there... that way you don't loose your security deposit in rediculous situations like that.

I think by law or some sort of ordinance they're required to disinfect apartments after someone moves out, and that costs them money, and if you leave it in such a clean condition, they have no reason to charge you, thus the disinfecting charges comes out of their pocket.

You think that's bad.. I moved out of my apt all prepared to get my $500 deposit back... now, mind you, I had never actually gotten a copy of my lease after I signed it (their copier was broken or some such crap) ... anyway, I go to get my check... and there is a $250 "redecorating fee" that is automatically deducted, which of course was in the fine print of the 38 pages of crap I signed.

The irony?

The apartment was being gutted to be turned into a condo the next week. As in, sheetrock torn off the walls, carpet taken out, counters and appliances removed, etc, etc, etc.

SO angry.

Should have hired an attorney. THen you could have gotten Double back what they owed you (at least in WI) PLUS they would have had to pay your attorneys fees. THen you could have really pissed them off.

In my lease it states "Security deposit may not be used as last month's rent". This means if you do not pay for the last month I will go thought the court system to sue and get my money. As well as be as big a Jerk on the security deposit. But by the sounds of it, someone who would use the security deposit as last month's rent would not have been approved or would have been evicted long before this became an issue. There is no disinfecting law in NY. The apt should be clean and livable. I clean the apt or have it cleaned by a service after someone moves out. I keep my apts as clean as I would want them if I lived there.

Kevin: I noticed some damage on the stove that there appears to have been created by a series of small fires. HA! I have given back security deposits where the condition was far worse than yours. You are dealing with a landlord that makes the rest of us look bad. They are figuring standard cleaning charges, not everyone cleans like you did. Most people wouldn't fight it. I'm sure nobody even looked at the apt before sending you the bill. Not common practice but it does happen.

When I move out of my apartment, I will be having my grandmother clean my apartment (in addition to myself). She IS a professional and has done this her entire life. The only thing I am worried about is carpet stains. There are a few spots on the new (extremely cheap and ugly) carpet.
