LAN Connect Speed

Hi,

I recently assembled a desktop rig with WinXP sp3 32-bit. I noticed that the Local Area Connection icon (bottom right of sys tray) shows that I'm connected at 10.0 Mbps.

On my laptop using Vista Home Premium 32-bit it shows I'm connected at 100Mbps (using the same cables)

I'm using the same ISP.

Any ideas why this is? Will this affect my speed at all (d/l , u/l or gaming?)

Thanks.

10Mb/sec. would effect downloads if your Internet connetion is above 10Mb/sec.

It should Not effect games.

In any case if you NIC is 100Mb/sec. and it delivers only 10Mb/sec. check the NIC's drivers setting and if they are on 10Mb/sec. put them on Auto.

Depending on the speed of your internet link, this could affect your performance (if you get more than 10Mbps up or down from you ISP).

What are you connecting to? a router/switch? or are you connecting directly to a DSL/Cable modem, or something else?

Check the NIC properties on both the laptop and the desktop to see if the link speed is set to autonegotiate on both of them. If not, which one is hard-set to a speed (either 10 or 100 Mbps)?

If both are set to autonegotiate, then you should probably try new ethernet cable. You can also try for driver/firmware updates on your NIC card. But I would put my money on a bad cable if you're having problems negotiating speed.
