My dad used to name his computer after us kids.. all 6 of us.

I have 4 pcs at home currently and they all used to follow a standard naming system. I named them all after spices or seasoning.

For example, my domain controller when I had one was named "spicerack" Then I had salt, pepper, ginger, basil, oregano, etc..

I have since switched and the computer names are all members of SG-1 except for my main pc which is aptly named "Stargate". I guess if I get more PCs, I will name them after jaffa or something..

Do any of you name your computers, or are they generic names like after an asset tag or something from the factory?

One place I used to work named the servers after the 100 Acre Wood (Pooh, Kanga, Roo, Tigger, etc.)

I remember reading this question a while ago on here. I name my computers, but they don't go by "themes."

Follow no set pattern. All computers are a member of the domain HELLHOLE and are named with whatever comes to me at the time of setup.

I don't name my computers other than the general 'Barton', 'Compaq', 'Laptop', etc. Though my server is unofficially named 'Shirl'.. but other than that..

My server, sadly, is named after my pet cat benji...

My mum's computer is her name, my computer is my 'ex' girlfriend's name, which will of course be changing when i get round to formatting.

Computers are named here based on pollution terms. NOx, PAH, CFC, SMOG, Dioxin, ozone... list goes on.

My main system is called "porkchopexpress".

I have seen a lan where all the servers were named after places and people from LOTR.

My old university also used these names for its major *nix servers.

I started out naming my work network machines after looney toons characters; but it was too much of a chore remembering what machine was what. In the end I named my servers, Tatoooine and Coruscant - the rest of the machines get their regular users' "function" as a name.

Those theme names are OK if you have only a half dozen or so computers. But as you get to bigger numbers of computers it is just a horrible mess.

"Is Dasher the forth from the left on the 3rd row of desks? Or is that Prancer?"

I've tried naming the computers after the users who actualy use it - and that works quite well until computers and people shift around. I've tried naming them by processor, by location, etc. All of those single naming schemes have drawbacks. I've found the best for me and others I work with is to name them BOTH by user name and computer location (and where that isn't enough info add in computer type.)

The place I work at was once named Shore.net, and all of the systems had ocean themed names for the most part: whale, nautilus, shell :D

lots more but I'm drawing a blank.

At offices I name workstation computers after their users. The server is always named server. At other poeple's homes (usually
just sharing a broadband connection) I name computers by their brand (IBM, Dell, etc...) My own computer or any I build and
sell to people I name Monstrosity.
