I completely agree that people over 70 for sure pose a great risk to other drivers and themsleves for the most part, but, to answer another question, the age group responsible for by far the highest number of accidents overall, and the highest rate of fatal accidents is and has been 15 - 25 year old drivers for many years........🙁

<< The accident was an old lady who rear-ended me at a traffic light, apologizing with the excuse that she was "distracted by a man's interesting hat". >>

The sad part is, that was probably the truth. I still ride with stubborn old folks that insist they can still drive from time to time, and they are looking every which way except right in front of them. And they actually get confused between the brake and gas pretty often (watch their feet) but usually catch themselves before they actually press it. And God forbid they are driving a car that has horn buttons as opposed to just pressing the center of the steering wheel. The only reason a driving test isn't mandatory after a certain age isn't because only old people vote, it's because old people run the damn government & courts. And that's a whole 'nother rant I could go off on.

That's only because that age group drives more than old people.

"how sad, hopefully no one dies"

As much as I would wish to say that, it is not in my nature to see people live in pain and suffering. If They cannot fairly recover, then maybe the other is best. I know I'm taking a stand that is unconventional, but that is what I would prefer should forbid it such ever happen to me.

Okay . . . back to the main discussion. What the hell was a woman who couldn't speak English doing on the wheel? Okay, I understand people have economical issues and limiting their ability to speaking only English to drive might aggrevate the condition for the low income. But God, an old woman in addition to language barrier?

I think it's time old folks be denied licences to drive. :| I've been seeing too many of them that shouldn't be on the wheel!

Please spare me of the it wouldn't be fair argument. Folks, here's a fact you may not have known or may have forgotten: Driving is a privilege, not a right. 🙂

That may be true........but, do they (15 - 25) drive more than the 25 - 40 or the 40 - 60 age groups??? No, they don't and there are far fewer of them statisticly,(15 - 25) but, they still account for the highest rate of accidents overall and fatal accidents according to D.O.T. statistics and Insurance statistics..........that makes them a huge risk to carriers and apparently overall................🙁

I still agree though, many people, especially 70+ years old present greater risks and I can't see how a mandatory yearly driving test would fall into discrimination since it is a fact that reaction time and mobility decreases significantly with age!

Old people need to be in nursing homes. They do not need to operate heavy machinery...

American culture at its finest.

Quote from story:

<< A car at the head of the line, a Mercedes-Benz, lurched forward, he said.

"The first car in line took off real fast, tires screeching, right at the middle of a group of children. Some were under the car. Some were thrown up," Austria said.
>>

Wow, I wish my "economic issues" and "low income" included a Mercedes-Benz.

What retard, and it is only 15 students and 3 adults. They should give her some time in jail to think about what a retard she is.

<< How can someone possibly hit 17 people? 1.. 2.. 3 maybe, but 17? wait, and 5 adults. >>

They were lined up, waiting to be picked up.
>>

still, that's 22 people.. how long does it take to find the brake pedal? I've honestly mistaken the gas for the brake once, only once, when i first began driving. i moved maybe a 6" to a foot before i found the brake again.

edit; spelling and addition 🙂

<< You know, this happens more than you think...........My wife and I watched an elderly couple get in a car parked directly in front of an Applebys (sp?) restaraunt a few years ago and the old guy put the car in drive I guess, ran right over the curb and into the restaraunt! Hit a few tables and hurt a few people with cuts and bruises but nothing major............I've noticed things like this in newspapers and on the news too...........🙁 I'm thinking maybe they need a mandatory drivers test after a certain age or something...........

I totally agree. However, the AARP has a lot of clout and would have any legislator's head on a platter before they coukd even propose such an idea :|

"Wow, I wish my 'economic issues' and 'low income' included a Mercedes-Benz."

Sweetie, [I'm afraid] you're missing the point. This lady drives a mercedes; but if we're to restrict the privilege to certain members of society, then it would affect the financially less privileged too. A lady like that who drives a mercedes can probably afford a driver, but her actions today would have affected a bunch who couldn't afford a driver or a mercedes.

"I've honestly mistaken the gas for the brake once, only once, when i first began driving. i moved maybe a 6" to a foot before i found the brake again."

Okay, okay . . . cast a stone upon me . . . I have a confession too: When my sis was teaching me how to drive, just after about three lessons . . . I mentally calculated the gas pedal for the brake and ended up accelerating. The bad part was it was on a rough area full of dried mud, so it didn't help the car much. But the good part was that it was an area where no one basically touched so no one's life was at risk. The primary reason for my mistake was my sis was lecturing at the same time, so I was listening to her whilst trying to do my best too. Hey folks, before you cast that stone upon me, this was about my third driving lesson. Ever since then I didn't make the mistake again! Yaaay! 😀
