Yes, it's very much a downward spiral. Conservatives are taught to resist basic human emotions and urges, repressing their own desires. The consequence is self-hate and a lack of self-worth. They project this onto others, ie "so-and-so like's sex, they must really hate themselves and lack self respect". When, in fact, it's the direct opposite. It also plays into this "get a job" mentality, where that's a source of self-worth for them. Ultra competitive means if successful then you mean something. If a failure, you're worthless and you can just off yourself with a gun. We see this plain as day in today's society.
