Smoltz was the rare exception. Along with Wood and Morris. It is not the norm. Also, Smoltz went from being a dominant pitcher, to a closer. It took him, what, 3 years to become their go-to closer? Now 5 years after the surgery, he's finally back to starting, and we'll see if his arm is healthy enough to go all season. Look at all the pitchers over the years that have had to have the surgery and never returned to the stature they once had.
There is a very real possibility that Gagne will never be as dominant as he once was, and never have the fame and prestige he enjoyed.
