<<<Gosh, right now is such a bad time to buy video cards. All of the next gen cards are scheduled to come out soon and geforce 3 prices will be dropping, any card you buy now will be obsolete very soon. i suggest getting an geforce ultra for $230 at least you'll have the best card of the current generation of vid cards.>>>

Yes most cards out now appart from the Geforce 3 will be obsolete in a year and for that very reason it'd be silly to buy the most expensive of those soon to be obsolete cards (the Geforce 2 Ultra).

<<<if you plan on upgrading soon, get a kyro or a geforce pro, you can't go wrong with either of them. I say try em both out and see which one you like.>>>

He's already said he wants a card he doesn't already have, he has a GTS and GTS Pro in other machines.

<< my only problem was that I needed to tweak colin mcrae2 for more 50% more performance (a little tweak in the registry...)
that is my only problem with kyro 2... one game that I needed to tweak with last drivers..
>>

suuuure... name some other games you PLAY not try like for 30 seconds. you claim your card is superior by saying it runs a game nobody else plays SOOO WELL i mean who gives a flying fsck? havnt even heard of that POS game. from all accounts, kyro2 seems to be a decent performer at a reasonable price, not so amazingly cheap in the US however. i have always taken chances by going lesser speed/more features i.e. g400, radeon etc, but i always come to realize subtle differences in visuals really dont justify sheer gap in performace or compatibility with popular games. another noteworthy opinion of mine is x card being able to match or surpass another card at unplayable resolutions really doesnt mean crap either, whatever makes your gaming experience more pleasant is the card you should get.

EDIT: if you are severely distracted by broken or non functioning VSYNC in OGL, you should think twice about getting radeons. taz or oldfart will jump in and tell you they have never seen such anomaly on their systems, but many others on rage3d board including me have repeatedly complained about absence of this essential feature. its not THAT noticable, but i wish they fix it sometime soon in their next driver release.

I would go with the Radeon, the drivers could use some work but it still has the best quality I have ever seen (better then any GForce/2/3) and it has almost the same DX8 support as the GF3. I have seen the Radeon perform and I cannot imagine using another card except for the Radeon II (I can't wait.

You haven't heard of Colin McRea Rally 2? Its a GREAT game!! However, I can see that this will probably appeal to Europeans more than it will many others as the rally following is much greater over here - its also coded by Codemasters, from Milton Keynes UK - don't know what their distribution is like elsewhere.

However, in this particular instance You can get a considerable performance increase with CMR2 - Codemasters lock the buffer when using lensflare; locking the buffer slows KYRO down, so using 'Defer Render Till Flip' eliminate the lock (as well as the lens flare) but considerably speed the game up.

I've tried it.

I didn't use that string here is what I did:

open regedit and then go here:
powervr->game settings->d3d->cmr2.exe
and create a new string there with this name :
DisableRenderOnLock
not forget to give the value 1 to it...

with the last patch I even get lens flare..
;)

this might be included with the next drivers.. so we don't have to enable DisableRenderOnLock for cmr2

If you cannot afford a GF3 at this time and must buy a new card then I would go with the KyroII considering your system. I really would try and get a GF3 though.

First I would like to apologize for mistakenly thinking that he could just move his Geforce pro to his new system. Personally one computer is all I'll ever need unless I do any web hosting, but hey, I'm a simple guy. As far as deciding between non-Geforce 2 cards goes....I'd have to say Kyro II, but maybe wait a month if you can and get the "Plus, Ultra, Enhanced?" version. Assuming it comes out that soon. The only thing I don't like about advising someone to get a KyroII right now is that the Kyro III is supposed to be out this winter. But I guess that is a pretty good ways off. While the Kyro II is very impressive, I'd hate to spend 100+ bucks on it just to spend another 120-160 and a WAY faster version on six months.
