Some shockwave games require 3d support. ;)

Sadly, seems I can't get this card to work, which is a shame. I'll probably just bide my time for a few months and get an upgrade and convince myself it was "high time" anyway. No CS and no Morrowind should help my study habits over the next few weeks, anyway. =)

I tried pulling my card out and installing it in a Thunderbird 1.3 GHz Win2K Professional Ed. System of my friend's, but the drivers wouldn't load - being stuck with 640x480 and default VGA adapter sucks. I almost think it's some kind of physical defect with the card, but the results are too random...

I didn't mean to start an argument between pro and anti Kyro users on the board. If my post stirred up any trouble, then I apologize. I got the card after reading Anandtech's excellent review, and so far, despite my troubles, I don't regret it. I guess this time it's just more of a question of matching a system to the card than matching a card to my system.

On another note, anyone have any advice for a good vid card in (or eventually falling in) the 100 dollar range within the next month or two? Not looking for anything fancy, just something with decent longetivity and compatibility with XP.

Thanks!

::Snaps fingers:: Dang, thought I had something there. Your problem still sounds a lot like a software issue though. Try www.paraknowya.com and read their FAQ to see if there's anything crooked in your BIOS settings. Check AGP modes, (Some Kyro's REALLY don't like 4X, while others don't mind a bit.) As for something cheap soonish...it looks like just about everybody has something new coming out in a few months that makes all current vid boards obselete, so it's really hard to say buy one right now, or wait for them. I honestly can't recommend anythign right now in that price range.

Here is what a senior member "PowerVR Guru" with 2129 posts had to say to the discussion

Question:
"Well now my kyro2 is dead, should i send it back to hercules or what?":
(snip)

Response:
"I say..... get that voodoo 3 2000 from you friend"
(snip)
"my voodoo 3 is making my kyro 2 look horribly bad in MAX PAYNE.... "

Coming from a PowerVR Guru, I think speaks volumes for how bad the card really is.

Ironically, when things are taken out of context.... and then used with a incorrect statement that seems to rely on the sapposed fact that I "speaks volumes for how bad the card really is" even though the "I think" is added, really doesn't sound to great in your currect posistion now does it?

First off, lets fix one thing. My Voodoo 3 3000 IS Overclocked to 210Mhz which is 35Mhz FASTER then my kyro 2 (hercules 4500)
Next, it's on a AMD DURON 700mhz CPU with an ABIT KT7-RAID.... 256mb of PC133 Ram and not to mention overclocked to 750Mhz (110fbs)
I'm using x3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 agp drivers (1.08.04) Which gives me LOADS of options and tweaks that i can flip on and off at will.. not to mention Geometry assist (Hardware TnL) plus, with 16 bit color and bilnear filtering not to mention my depth presisions set to the fastest and lod is set to smoother/blurry. Basically, i have this sucker running at nearly fastest... however in game, i have everything set to the maxium detail the voodoo will support.

My kyro to has been fried.... still works... but i ended up frying it accidently... One reason it's slower then the voodoo... Another is that it's on an Athlon 600mhz running 618mhz (103FBS) Abit KA7-100. A crappy monitor hidders te preformance because i have v-sync enabled (less eyestrain at 60 hz) And high quality settings are turned on in both drivers and ingame... Yet it still seems to pull even with the voodoo in some places.... and bashes it completly in other...

So before assuming that i have defaults on everything.... and doing a quick compare... QUIT MAKING AN ASS OUTA YOU AND ME!

(i'd add more.... but i have more and better things to do rather then defend myself and other... and correcting what was wrong..)

Now this is funny.
I have not bothered to post in a few days, because all of you have points well taken, even if I disagree.
As always, I would never post anything without providing a URL so that others can check for themselves
the exact wording that someone used. What good is someones word if they can't back it up? So, I did
properly put the URL that fully explains how a PowerVR Guru KyroII users stated that his V3 worked better. Nothing
to hide on my part. Even put in the "snip" where I cut out info to save space. But the URL link that I posted
shows the whole story.

I then provided links to the Tom's VGA card update, that shows how the Kyro II compares to ther cards.

These are simply links to what others are saying!!! If you don't like it, have them explain.

To gauge how KyroII owners feel about the current state of things, I took a look over at the PowerVR link posted above.
I have a friend with a new PC that has no AGP slot, so looked at if KyroII may be better than GF2 MX400, and to get more info.
What is funny is they now have a new thread over there that calls me a Spy! HaHaHa, now that is funny.

robstv,

judas is a nice kid, and a helpful one at that...

he is an ex-voodoo user and entitled to his own views and opinions just as everyone else is - he likes his old cards

however [and no offence is intended here judas] the "guru" status he has on the pvr-net board (which has only been in existance in its present form since the end of last year) has been achieved purely by excessive posting, so don't go attaching any "admin/veteran" type tag to his opinions to back up your own

i just thought i'd clarify that bit

also, i'm not trying to be antagonistic towards you - you just picked a bad reference for your point

that's all
