There's a huge thread over at [H|ardforum about this. I didn't read through it all but apparently there's a lot of Canada-bashing going on now. I think this Canadian guy summed it up pretty well:

Mikolieangelo:
I, as a Canadian wasn't horribly offended when he called them "Canuck" promises , I was a little puzzeled at first to whether or not I SHOULD be offended, but it didn't strike me as horribly defamitory. IMHO anyone that is offended by such a tiny statement needs to be slapped.
I don't think it was necessary, or even appropriate though.
I was totally gung hoe for that write-up about ATI's annoying paper launches up until that point. I was just really confused by the context he used the word in. Is he trying to say that "Canuck" promises are what, promises that aren't kept? Because in my interpretation of the English language, that's what it sounds like.

If ANYTHING, I'm kinda peeved at his total disregard for my countrymen, some who apparently WERE very upset.
In true e-penis fashion, he upped the anti by telling Canadian's who didn't like it to never come back again.
That's maturity.
Instead of simply fixing the problem with a simple "I shouldn't have said that, sorry" or even a totally un-noticable silent edit of the post, he spat on Canada.
It's also amazing to see the reaction in the forums, every American spitting venom at anyone who dares question the issue, and 90% of the posts being anti- the rest of the world, filled with American superiority propaganda.
It was nice to see the editor of the website not say a single thing after the forum whores started up with the whole Canada bashing.
and after the Phantom debacle, to think I respected the guy

and Kyle, to answer your question, I will be going to Anantech from now on. They might be PC, but it's better than being treated like a POS.

It appears as though ATi fanboyism and a presdisposition towards character assassination go hand in hand. No need to actually discuss the point of what he said, people...there are semantics that need to be addressed immediately!

I can't blame the guy for wondering why people always attack the person and utterly disregard the fact that what he said was well justified, although rather harsh. All the fanboy love in the world doesn't actually make Crossfire any more available though...

Wow, Kyle's response was typical of that thread. Made the comment, downplayed it, then insulted those with an issue with it, continued insulting those people in the name of "nonPC", and finally told those insulteed to just leave.

Kyle's a real class act...not.

Really makes you wonder why people bother going back. If Anand got on here and started arguing with us then told us to leave. I'd leave and never bother coming back.
Arguing is fine but acting like a child and telling people to leave your site is idiotic.

So I say piss off Kyle

Ya, I suppose. I've read a few reviews at his site over the years and they seem pretty good, but I never frequented the site. Almost makes me wish I did so that I could make the exit in protest though. 😀

I didn't care about his use of the word 'Canuck', in fact I found his news post to be pretty entertaining. But I just had to e-mail his ass about poking at Anandtech, he should know AT pushes Hard's sh!t in sideways.

Hahahahah. Man I'm Canadian and that was hilarious. What are we, British now? OK so he shouldn't have said Canuck right there, cause if it was an American company it wouldn't have made sense to say empty American promises either. As for the angry pro-Americanism on their boards, well they're sort of justified in that their country is currently the most powerful in the world. Dunno how much they added to it individually though. Yay I happened to be born here I'm entitled to XX. If Canada ruled the world we'd be gung-ho about it too. Bah, basic human nature still sucks a saurkraut.

Still, without it would have been one boring day. 24 hrs left till NDA expires...

It shouldnt surprise people when they visit a website that has a name like a Quake 3 clan this is what you get.

Word. Kyle's ALWAYS been a bit of a jackass so this is right up his alley. No biggie. I still go there with my usual round of websites for reviews.

Its the collective. Not many individual people in Rome contributed to their success either.. but they certainly had a right to be proud (they each had to contribute a few years into the military ect).

I am proud like those people at OCP because while I contribute thru my taxes, and my unwillingness to run and hide from my duty as an American if drafted into a conflict.. but because my family has certainly (collectively) put MANY contributions into this country.

Just thought I'd clear that up.

You must understand America to understand Kyle. Hes from Texas. They are not cowards or weaklings in the face of adversity.
From what I've encountered, most Europeans and maybe Canadians (?) dont truley understand the roots of American society, and why were are so different (our heritage of bloodshed, religon ect has formed a unique nation) that is not better or worse than any other nation if you ask me.. just unique and different.

As much as we're hated for not understanding everyone else and respecting them.. its equally a problem that the rest of the world sees us as big obnoxious people.. and thats just not the truth.. but there are reasons for that image if you understand our upbringing into the world.

For a moment imagine ATI is a yankee company  (I know, I know) and then read his comment:
The bottom line is that the enthusiast hardware community wants products, not Yankee promises.
Feeling the same ? Didnt think so.

I feel the same. I don't think if a term has negative connotations, a person should feel badly being addressed by it.

I live in Wisconsin. We're known as "Wisconsinites". If Kyle posted "I want action from Rollo, not Wisconsinite promises!" I wouldn't care. I'm a Wisconsinite?

Come on, we know the real reason you are not offended by the term Yankee, it's because you are really a Johnny Reb at heart. 😀

kyle is cool

I give him credit for a lot of the things he's done and for not being afraid to knock down a few companies when they practice some shady business practices. Who says these sites have to all treat these corporations with the highest respect? Not only that but he makes it fun with some of his harsh talking. Hardocp and Kyle have a definite unique outlet for enthusiasts, keep it up 🙂.

that kyle is american or more specifically from texas. is no excuse for being an obnoxious a$$. the truth is that the majority of people who made this country what it is are far more humble. to coin a phrase "walk softly and carry a big stick" is more the american, rather than "yell and insult to make up for not having a big stick" methodology -- the loudmouths are generally the one's who have contributed little, and make up for their inferiority by calling attention to themselves.

sort of akin to the fanboy/epenis thing 😉

Belongs in P&N, guys. Nealy every country in the world has its history of bloodshed, so what? Religious upheavals are not unique to us either. So, in spite of this being in wrong category, I agree with CaiNaM here. Nationality never gives you reason to behave like an a$$, although it seems being an American is nearly synonomous with that in certain parts of the world...

What's dissapointig is how he behaved after making the comment. He kept throwing insults out and then locked the thread. People have various levels of immunity to insults. That's not the point.

The fact that the thread turned to Canada bashing over some comment about a Canadian company that makes video cards and how they paper launched a niche product is absurd. ...morons will be morons though. This isn't like some drug company cured cancer and withheld the cure. It's a frikin video card.

Also, its not like Kyle is actually going to be that critical tomorrow. He says he'll post a review and be critical, but I doubt it. Tom said he wouldn't review unreleased cards either - but I'll bet you my video card he'll have a review of the X1800xx series, paper launch or not.
