Kung fu practicality?

So far I have taken two martial art forms at different points in my life. Kenpo and Goju. I liked both. Goju seems to be pretty practical in a random fight situation moreso than Kenpo. Kenpo I also feel is very practical. I've had to stop both due to time contraints etc. There is a Kung Fu place right by my work and I was wondering if it is more of a showy form or is it something quick and devestating which will be effective in a random brawl? I don't know much about it outside of movies.

Kung Fu = roughly translates to "good skill" but is mainly used to describe martial arts in Chinese. Over 2,000 styles. Name the specific style. What style kung fo is it? Wing Chun? Wing Tsun? Choy Li Fut? Northern Seven Star Praying Mantis? Eagle Claw? Shaolin Longfist?

And it really depends on the school as well: some schools suck, others are good - the best judge of that would be you - go check it out.

Ditto.

Any style is only pratical if you spar and train with it. Doing forms and any moves over and over again in practice isn't going to be so good unless you have sparred or had real fights.

You don't need to know lots of moves to defend yourself. Simple headbutt or strike to neck or punch to face is enough for a time for you to run.

Let's see.......in the real world I will simply draw my legally concealed .45 Colt and perforate your forehead. It is a discipline and a form of exersise but if think you are in a Chuck Norris or Jackie Chan movie you are going to either die or get your ass kicked.

While CCW is an excellent solution, it doesn't work in every circumstance.

It works in a lot more situations than someone's dilusional dreams of being Jet Li. I have been attacked by someone who thought they were a martial arts expert. I simply picked up a wrought iron lawn chair and hit the bastard over the head.....end of story (and he came at me with scythes sp?).

Your so lucky it was a wanna be kung fu master.
A true kung fu practicioner (not some wanna be Jackie Chan) would have not attacked you at all. Now, had you attacked him, and he had weapons.... Well, the perforated forehead option is quite accurate to what have happened.

you should try to master smith and wesson =P

why don't you take muay thai/kickboxing/boxing

Why? Do you have any experience with any of those styles mentioned? Or are you, as I'm suspecting, . . ..

I have never and will never start a fight with anyone but if you threaten me I WILL ventilate your forehead with a .45 ACP round. True martial arts Masters also know that MA is designed to be defensive in nature, not offensive and would never strike the first blow. All these movies with MA/Kung FU etc. are nothing but a bunch of BS.....noone in the real world fights with this crap unless they are a bunch of kids trying to act cool. Policemen carry guns and shoot people like Jet Li in real life......they don't battle them to the end in MA like a fricken Lethal Weapon movie.

Agreed (although I'd question the Jet Li example).

Sig p228 w/ Crimson Trace laser grips and 13rd mag for my everyday pistol. You still don't go looking for trouble... Martial arts will get you out of some trouble, a pistol might get you out of a little more trouble.... but everything has it's limits.

Proud CCW in Dallas, TX.

EDIT: I can imagine a policeman seeing Jet Li walking down a street in LA. He excitedly draws his pistol and shoots him. "HA! Got ya! Ya bastard...." For no apparent reason... Aside from the fact that policemen shoot people like jet li, according to the above post.

Because you dont mess with a Muy Tai fighter. Kick boxing? Pft. Nothing.
Muy Tai? Run. Run very very far and run very very fast, because they will mess you up so freaking fast......

Not really. At least I am being realistic and honest. Sounds more to me like people are trying to stroke the MA ability. I don't even carry a gun except on rare occasions. I have never needed one and hope I never do. I find life is much easier if you don't put yourself in situations where you might need a gun and this works 99% of the time, the other 1% is what the CCL is for. I have a friend who can't go ANYWHERE without his weapon, I am the exact opposite but I would have no hesitation using it if the need ever arose.

Well, believe me - I'm not belittling the validity of any of the styles mentioned above, but it seemed like he was talking out of his ass, i.e. had no clue what he was talking about. Like I previously said, it's more dependent on the school/instructor/student, rather than the style. It's soo hard to find the previously mentioned three . . ..

I'd rather take a chance in losing a fight, then shooting someone. Unless they're trying to kill me I'd never use a gun. And I like how all these gun people just have to brag about what guns they have.

Oh yeah back to the real subject 😛 I'd say jujitsu and kickboxing are the best things to learn for self defense. Any martial art is practical, you have it with you all the time and it's good exercise 🙂

I'd say judo is your best bet. How many fights have you seen go start to finish and stay up? Most I've seen end up on the ground.
But I'll say instructor / school is probably the most important part, more then style.
All these gun nuts who give real gun owners a bad name. Piss me off..
I'D just shoot'm!! I'd just fill'm with lead! I'd just ventilate them!!
Ridiculous. No wonder they try to ban our guns. Jesus.

queensbury rules anyone? The problem with martial arts is that its all well and good to a point, if you cant take a punch it all goes to sh*t.

The Kung Fu dojo around the corner from me uses Choy Li Fut

and how the hell did this turn into a gun conversation? Obviously if someone has a gun then they are the boss. If they are trying to rob me they have can have my money-who cares. I know techniques to disarm and shoot people with their own guns/knives but I would only due it if I was certain they were going to kill me because all risk being shot and grazed.

Good point on the judo thing. Stuff always ends up on the ground.

A gun might offer more protection but depending on where you live, you better be pretty darn sure the other guy was about to kill you, and not just beat you up. Otherwise it won't be a defense to manslaughter charges

Even against a knife my form tae kwon do friend said to either run or give up your money without a fight. He said there are to many veins & arteries in the arms and even if your a good martial artist it does not take an expert to cut you so bad you die 😛

Cheers,
Aquaman
