Publix > All other non-premium grocery stores.

Certainly you are right with regards to prices. Publix costs a hell of alot more than any other grocery stores, although Giant Eagle is up there too.

And yes that fucking card thing(Krogers and Ingles around here) pisses me off too. What if I forget my card or what not, then I gotta pay inflated costs. Blow me.

Meijer is owned by Krogers. Although I prefer Meijer.

Meijer isn't owned by Kroger.

Kroger has good sales and nice coupons. If it were not for their close location to my home and the store being far less crowded, it would be better (i.e. cheaper) to shop elsewhere. With sales and special mailed Kroger coupons, you can "generally" do quite well.

Around here, we have Kroger, Alberson, Walmart, Super Target, sand Brookshire (based in East Texas).

All of them are ok, sometimes one of them has something on sale that is lower price than the others and other times, other stores have lower price on some other items.

I don't get the hate on "discount cards". You can get one and put it on your key chain, and if you forgot or lose it, grasp one at the cashier station to use it temporary for the discounts. If you don't want the stores to know what you buy, then don't register/fill out the cards, just use them.

No you don't, you can type in the phone number associated with the account, and you get the discount. I haven't carried my Kroger card in 10 years.

What ever happened to Big Bear? Did they get bought out by Kroger's?

Big Bear was acquired by Penn Traffic in the early 90s, and promptly run into the ground. They declared bankruptcy and operated for quite some time (under either chapter 11 or 13), but eventually went out of business in 2003.

All national grocery store chains now have market-specific pricing. Here in DFW, Kroger is one of the cheaper ones, definitely cheaper than Albertson's and Tom Thumb, the two main competitors. Wal Mart is cheaper still (on most things), but their meat and vegetable quality and selection is simply terrible.

One thing that pisses me off about Kroger (and most other stores are doing this too), is those god damned 'discount' cards or whatever. Discount my ass! They mark the regular price up xx% and then only charge a fair price WITH the card. Don't have a card? Prepare your anal cavity for some reaming. A recent example :

12 pack Coca Cola 12 oz cans.

With card : 3 for $10 or $3.33/ea
Without card : $4.99

WTF?

That's most markets that have perfered savings cards. I went to Ralphs to get a toothbrush. price without card was $4.50, on sale if you had a card - 4 of them for $6.

Yeah, it wasn't until recently that I realized that. Although the number that we signed up with was our old number and I forgot that we signed up with that number. Just figured out what that number was right before we had to get new kroger cards because my key chain and credit card size card were fubar'd.

I don't think ingles though does that. Any time I don't have my card, the lady takes my telephone number, has to go to customer service, have them look it up, and then come back and type in the customer number. Why can't I just swipe my dick across the scanner?

No...Meijer is based out of Grand Rapids, MI. Know how I know? Their corporate headquarters is on the same street as my job. I have to deal with the army of idiots that go in at the same time as me. Everyone that works there is trying to cram up the exit ramp at 7:58. They are like a herd of retarded cattle driving bumper cars.

I still shop there. Their caramel apple pie is win!

HAHAHAHAHA!

You should totally stuff a giant black dildo into your pants, and attach the bar code from the discount card to it. Then when you go through the checkout and she asks for your card, you can whip your 16-inch cock out and drag it across the scanner! If you get in trouble, just attack them with it!

Krorger is cheaper than Walmart here and the Kroger brand generic is much better than the Walmart generic.

If you don't print out coupons en masse every time you go grocery shopping, you're pissing away money.

I wish I had a Kroger's near me. That place was great for FAR or very cheap stuff.

HEB is the best. Cheapest prices without a stupid card and the best produce and meats

Here in Ohio, Kroger rules. No question about that in my mind. Having to use a card to get some good prices is a minor inconvenience, would rather not needing the card but I won't throw a fit seeing as the card is free and requires a quick swipe.

However, when I was in Texas visiting my sister (near San Antonio, in Canyon Lake specifically, recently moved to SA proper), she took me to a local HEB. Sweet Jesus that place is nuts. It was HUGE. And they had some good cuts of meat, at least I assume. All I got to taste was the ribs my BIL purchased, he cooked them up something tasty and a lot of the issue with ribs is the skill in preparation, but after properly preparing them, I'm pretty sure I'd stand by the ribs purchased at HEB than most other grocers. Even after properly preparing ribs, you'll stick run into meat quality issues, and these just fell off the bone and could bite through them like butter.

I didn't pay much attention to the prices, but the HEB we went to literally had everything and more. I'm pretty sure I got myself lost in there for a few minutes.

Kroger's here is the best.

The least expensive (with card), best meat, fresh produce etc

Schnucks and Jewel are the "high end". Cubs Foods competes with Krogers but generally loses.

Edit - and Kroger's store brands are cheap AND good.

Krogers always look like they should be in the bad part of town, where you have to worry about being stabbed for your Tuna Helper on the way out.

I've had them refuse before. That's when I figured out I could use my phone number.

(Responding to both of the above.)

That depends on which town you're in. Some of the stores are horrible, and some of them are downright awesome. There's two in the town where I work -- on opposite sides of town. The east side store is great, recently remodeled, and is by far the cleanest grocery I have ever been in, bar none. The one on the west side isn't so much. There's a Meijer in the same town, and while I suppose it's OK, it just seems a little bit "what the hell are you doing in my store, you're not welcome here!"-ish.

I pretty much only shop at Krogers and I have to drive 16 miles to get to one. Only other option here is Wal-mart and a local 'chain'. Both of them suck! At least I can find everything I am looking for in Krogers and here I think they have decent prices.

I do like Publix better though, however they cost noticeably more. Ingles can be nice sometimes too.

The Kroger card isn't such a bad thing either, I get coupons in the mail every few weeks, some being straight 'free item x' of things i regularly purchase, as well as coupons that match things I normally would get.
