All national grocery store chains now have market-specific pricing. Here in DFW, Kroger is one of the cheaper ones, definitely cheaper than Albertson's and Tom Thumb, the two main competitors. Wal Mart is cheaper still (on most things), but their meat and vegetable quality and selection is simply terrible.
One thing that pisses me off about Kroger (and most other stores are doing this too), is those god damned 'discount' cards or whatever. Discount my ass! They mark the regular price up xx% and then only charge a fair price WITH the card. Don't have a card? Prepare your anal cavity for some reaming. A recent example :
12 pack Coca Cola 12 oz cans.
With card : 3 for $10 or $3.33/ea
Without card : $4.99
WTF?
In Richmond, we have a locally owned grocery chain called Ukrops.
long story short, they're the most expensive and also very clean (similar to whole foods, except not as green and they do not sell alcohol at all, not one drop). today they were purchased by royal ahold. I kid you not... they own giants.
i thought krogers were pretty cheap in comparison while food lions here are pretty dirty.
cheapest is the walmart super store, our only other choice.

I hate kroger because of their stupid kroger card that you have to use
Why do you care whether or not Kroger knows what you purchase?
Also, I shop at Kroger (for groceries) more often than Walmart, Meijer, or any of the other local grocers.
Meijer is not owned by Kroger.
We don't give a shit if Kroger knows what we purchase, but it's annoying to have to keep a stupid card/fob, or to have to enter our phone number to 'activate' what should be regular sale prices.
It would also not be so bad if so many places weren't jumping on this stupid train. CVS and Walgreens are similar as well I think. And Tom Thumb, and Albertsons, and so on.
HEB is the best. Cheapest prices without a stupid card and the best produce and meats
Meijer is owned by Krogers. Although I prefer Meijer.
