all music is a rehash of those that came before them. metallica did nothing new, just as korn did not.

Wow.

Just... wow.

what did they do that had never been done before?

Introduce a heavy and fast sound with cynical lyrics at a time when high and light guitars with big hair was all the rage.

All music draws influence from other music.....but it's a damn foolish thing to say it's a rehash. They mean totally different things.

[edit]
Oh and, as far as I'm concerned, they practically invented power chords in heavy metal.

Who mainstreamed or popularized it? Black Sabbath? No. Metallica. Black Sabbath may have started it first, but Metallica was obviously doing it better since they're more popular.

Or maybe they're just better marketed?

Have you ever LISTENED to any of their music? I think a better question would be what songs have been released on Metallica albums that were not written by/for Metallica but instead written by/for another artist that Metallica bought rights to remake the song and re-release it?

Seriously.

shuddafuggup and go LISTEN to all of their albums. With a little creativity, you should be able to legally listen to every album they've released without spending a dime. I highly suggest doing so before doing something stupid like equating them to All-Four-One or something.

ive listened to metallica, every album, for the 20 or so yrs theyve been around. you think no one used heavy guitar riffs and the same drum beat before metallica came along? you think they werent influenced by the bands they listened to when they were growing up? you honestly think they didnt incorporate and rehash those sounds into their own music?

seriously.

go back and listen to the artists from the past 100, 200, 1000 years or so. youll find that there are no new sounds or ideas when it comes to music. just all repackaged for each new buying genereation that hasnt heard it before. you may want to take your fan boy hat off before doing something stupid like declaring a band as revolutionary and unique.

Alright, nobody is allowed to like new music from now on because its all a rip-off of a caveman banging his club against a rock.

black sabbath anyone?

I wouldn't call Sabbath a very "speedy" metal band, and they were more about dissonance than Metallica (who was alot about guitar harmony and solos....though Maiden took that to another level). I credit Sabbath for inventing Metal in the first place and, obviously, being a big influence on bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, etc...

i wouldnt give the credit to any one band. i guess sabbath wasnt influenced by the likes of the artists before them? its all a mix and rehash(lets play the semantic game) of sounds from previous bands, and the advances in instruments and recording. and, as nik said, marketing.

just my opinion.

almost all music is rehashed. The artist listens, thinks, combines.

The masses are entertained with something a little different.

I love people saying Led Zeppelin sucks, Puff Daddy sucks, Garth Brooks sucks, Yanni sucks, etc.

I can say I don't care for everything Yanni or Led Zeppelin or Metallica or Sarah McLachlin has performed, but I am not going to say any of them are terrible musicians.

They all have made songs in my head.

That's what it's about.

Metallica is the greatest band of all time. Their last 3 albums certainly haven't helped their case though. They strayed away from what made them great.
