The story is still terrible and there are plenty of other defectors with terrible stories. This guy lied, but it doesn't diminish how poorly NK treats their people.

This is not The Interview. The shit we hear about NK is not propaganda...It's the truth.

Third, and perhaps most importantly, with or without Shin’s testimony, there is a wide body of evidence that the prison camps exist — and are absolutely brutal. A United Nations investigation into the country’s rights abuses includes testimony from 80 witnesses, and was also based on accounts by 240 others who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. “The basic knowledge on how serious this is does not hinge on the details of one person’s story,” says Park.

Too many people have come forward for there not to be some truth behind it. NK is a nightmare to live under.

He did not say all of it was lies. But I would still not consider him trust worthy.

Even if we disregard 100% of his testimony, there is far too much evidence showing how awful NK is to pretend it is all propaganda from the west.

This is big, the west bought into his lies and used him as propaganda against korea. Now we see the truth.

Now we see the truth. All of it were lies. NK's love living there. It's a worker's paradise. No one goes hungry, there is no arbitrary, overly harsh imprisonment, etc... All lies...

One guy lies about part of his story. Okay, we discredit much of his testimony about conditions in NK. But are all the stories coming out about NK lies? I highly doubt it.

OP should change the thread title, currently it is a much bigger lie than the one that the subject of the thread told.

Wonder if that satellite pic of North Korea being pitch black at night while South Korea is lit up like a Christmas tree is a lie also...

That picture is correct, but the propaganda of the west is so good, we actually believe North Korea is north of South Korea. What we are really seeing is just how poor South Korea is and how prosperous North Korea is.

Most NK citizens are brainwashed/programmed.

They'll tell you exactly what the brainwashers have programmed them to tell you.

There is virtually no possible way that NK citizens are able to think clearly and rationally given their government and their isolation.

I wouldnt say that it s a country that lack some repression or that everything is going well there, that said Pyong Yang is quite clean, only the starving bodies lying through the streets that we ear unrelentlessly about are missing, nevermind that the tour was prepared, i find thoses north koreans quite capable...

Yep.

Seems to me the article that the OP links still substantially supports the escapee's story. (Note the OP labels him as a "traitor". Interesting, no?)

Trouble is, it was not all true.

On Friday Jan. 16, Shin told Harden a revised version of the story. While he was born at Camp 14, he spent part of his youth at another complex, Camp 18, escaping twice before landing back at the first camp, he now says. And it was at Camp 18, not at Camp 14, that he betrayed his mother and brother, sharing their plan to escape, and then witnessing their executions. This and other new details came to light after fellow defectors raised questions about the tale. The new timeline, first published by the Washington Post, has yet to be confirmed.

So the problem is about the exact details of which camp he was at what time period? If that's not a big deal I don't what is (/sarcasm)

More from the article:

Look at this grief. No leader was loved more than Kim Jong Il. No evil dictator would command such love.
