jtallon -- just to let you know you're not alone on this. It bugs me too. But I kept my mouth shut, seeing as how we have some pretty sensitive people here...

Yes, I would have to agree that the origin of the slang is not just slamming eBay.. It was also inspite of the "censoring" of the word.
We could have called it GayBay instead...

Yes, god forbid somebody actually say how they FEEL about something. You should just make light of everything anybody says that you disagree with. Thats for the best.

SERENITY NOW !!!

calling someone or something gay has no more of an implication that homosexuality is bad than calling someone a bitch has an implication that female dogs are bad.

The word has more than one meaning.

While it never got me really angry, the use of "egay" usually elicits a smirk from me.

Yes, it was because ebay was a forbidden word and yes, there were times when it would seem that there was a negative connotation.

Yes, gay is used as slang. I wish we not only had a eye-roll smiley, but also a smiley that would thwack somebody on the head for being a doofus. People will eventually get out of the habit of using gay as a derogatory term. However, given the demeanor (and age) of many of the users here, it's a bit much to expect everyone to "use clear, well spoken arguements to express your opinion, instead of childish name calling".

Hey guess what? I do think being gay is wrong....

So what?

Do you ever let your children out of the house? If them hearing Egay is one of the BAD things that happens to them, you are quite fortunate.

To all the people of the world who:
1. Used egay because ebay was a banned term
2. Used egay because the letter 'b' on their keyboard is broke, and 'g' is pretty close to it
3. Used egay meaning e"happy", or any of the other 26 non-homosexual definitions of the word

I humbly apologize to all of you for ever implying that you were morally unsound.

BUT, to anybody out there that uses egay because of it's negative homosexual implications, I *DO* have a problem with that. I don't see how it's funny, or how it "doesn't mean anything", or how it's simply a matter of being or not being "Politically Correct". People READ what you write, and people learn from what you do. If you imply in conversation that gay people are bad, then people will learn from that. Whether you intend it to be that way or not, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS.

That's my opinion. I'll leave it at that. Most people who have responded have stated that they type 'egay' because of #1 above. Fine - as mentioned above, I apologize to them.

Now, I'll shut up - I just wanted to take one last stab at expressing my beliefs on this issue, and taking the conversation to a higher level than "If you think Egay is bad, you must be a stupidhead".

Uhm, why ? Do you know any tall people ?

The arguement is that because I don't know any Afghan people personally, I shouldn't give a damn about their well being ? Because I don't know any French people, screw 'em all ? Because I don't know any gay people I shouldn't speak up for their rights ?

Fine. Explain to a PC idiot like me *WHY* it's 'punny'. Maybe if you explain it well enough, I'll actually get it.

If it's because it's a play on words, why not use may, say, day, lay, way, ray, or pay instead of gay ? What makes gay such a special word ? Is it because it's "happy" ? If so, I get it - ha ha. Because when you are at ebay, you are happy. Really - I get that. Rolling on the floor right now...

No, it's because if you did know gay people, you'd know that they ALL aren't offended by it and it doesn't affect their rights.

They are just words.

And you'll never find it funny. There's no explaination that will add humor to it. Gay people don't need you fighting for what you "think" is right for them. Let them do it themselves because they've been doing a helluva job thus far.

You know, I jokingly referred to someone's thread the other day as "the moronic thread of the day." It's sad, but I think I can start officially handing out those awards....this thread gets today's. :|

Fine. Uncle. I give in. No one has given a good reason *TO* use that word, and we all know many reasons *NOT* to use it, but I'm a moron for suggesting that we don't use it. I'll never try to improve society again, I promise.

Lets go back to debating something really important, like how much water you drink (and pee) each day. Now THAT's an important subject.

LOL you're too funny... read your own thread. People have posted plenty of "good" reasons to use it (even though ppl shouldn't hafta "justify" their word choice in the first place, who died and made you king?) The reasons just aren't "good" enough for you.

personally, i don't care if you "get it" or not. the point is other people "get it" and it's funny to them. just about all jokes are based upon pain, hurt or insensitivity. should we start banning a sense of humor now? will that make all you PC freaks happy? you don't like a play on words using gay, too bad; other people don't like jokes about other subjects, so what? they're jokes, that's it. get over it.
