Know what bugs me ? Calling Ebay E*G*ay !

Might be a can of worms, but what the hell... Ok - let me start this out right away - I'm *NOT* gay. But it sort of irks me when I see lots of people calling ebay "egay". Seems to me that when people do this, they are in one of two catagories:

1. Homophobic prejudiced people who think being gay is wrong, and use this as a way to express their opinions.

or

2. People who don't know better.

Granted everybody has the right to express their own opinion, but this just isn't something that I'd care for my children to read, and it's not a connotation that I like. Obviously the implication is that being gay is bad, therefore by calling ebay "egay", you are saying that ebay is bad. Just seems sort of childish to me. I guess I would say the following:

In response to #1 - fine. Have your own opinion. But use clear, well spoken arguements to express your opinion, instead of childish name calling (egay). If you truly believe that being gay is wrong, then say so in a way that actually shows you have a reasonable opinion.

In response to #2 - wake up. Offhand remarks like this and NOT "raising the bar" of human decency are what has lead to generation after generation of prejudice in some areas of the south. It's not politically correct to say "blacks are bad", but ask a white male from the south to tell you a joke, and it will probably have to deal with black people doing something wrong. It's latent prejudice - the same type of thing that using "egay" promotes. You aren't outright SAYING that being gay is bad, but you aren't *NOT* saying it either. Pick a side, and then properly voice your opinion.

Flame away. Don't bother calling me gay, or calling me a gay-supporter, or any crap like that. This post really isn't even ABOUT being gay - it's about making a moral and ethical decision to voice an opinion, or to tolerate the opinion of another. What I'm saying is that calling ebay "egay" is just a very poor way to voice that opinion.

Opinions ?

Oh give it a rest. The only reason why people here call it Egay is b/c we HAD to for the longest time. Ebay was a banned term here on the forums and couldn't be used.

So what's the closest letter on the keyboard to "B" and makes some "audible" sense when pronouncing it?? That's right folks, "G"

EFay, and ETay just don't have the same ring as EGay. Old habits die hard now that EBay is not banned anymore.

Get it, Got it, GOOD. It is not meant as a derrogitory term here.

PEOPLE, PLEASE REMOVE THE STICKS FROM YOUR ARSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:disgust:

ahh it just words.
the word gay is slang for alot of things.
Opinion:there are much more worthwhile things to be "bugged" about.

A) Overreaction
B) Part of it is due to the fact that the word EBAY used to not be allowed on here, you couldn't get a post up using it in anyway due to auctions being
unallowed so we had to say things like eb@y or E - Bay, so some people subbed other stuff for it.
Breathe, in through the nose, out through the mouth, count to 10 backwards and relax, its not a big deal.

I actually didn't know there was a good reason for calling it egay. Is that actually right - that ebay was a banned term ?

Maybe it's a poor choice, but that explains it I guess. Well. That takes the steam out of my discussion I guess...

you know what bugs me? when people tell me what to do and what not to do.

you DO know the word gay has other meanings that the homosexual connotation don't you?

It is true. When I first signed up, it told me I could not Post because I had a forbidden word. 😛

Now I can say it all I want! eBay, eBay, eBay!

The Moral Majority would be incensed!

Know what bugs me? People from Wisconsin using stereotypes and pretending they know what the south is like, conveniently ignoring the fact that racism exists everywhere.

It is surely right, I think the ban was lifted when Jeremy Alford had auctions on ebay to help out or something and they had to lift it so they could post them and it was open since then.

It's official - you're gay!

NFS4 is right! I like ebay, but I just like writing EGAY, and I started this from habit. What does it matter what it is called?

<< you DO know the word gay has other meanings that the homosexual connotation don't you? >>

Heh - yeah. I bet everybody that says egay really means that they are expressing their happiness with ebay. Gay as in happy. Sure. I now understand that there was a REASON for not using ebay, but I don't buy for a second that anybody that typed egay on purpose (wanting to type 'gay') actually mean e"happy".

By the way everyone - sorry if the "know what bugs me" hit a nerve - I was just trying to voice my opinion.

that's another thing that bugs me! people who DO NOT do any research on an argument but instead just argue something stupid. If you had looked at this board, you would SEE that the only time egay comes up is when referring to an auction found on a specific company's website.... like "look at this auction on egay..."

not.. "damn man ... you are egay! here's a picture of a nekked chick!"

sheesh!!

Doh ! Good point - I humbly apologize. Actually I had a specific co-worker from Memphis in mind as I typed that, but it was phrased poorly. Sorry !

Err, not a good example. If my profile was correct, it would say im in ohio, but that wouldnt reflect that I lived in texas for 12 years, or that I spent years on a family ranch in new mexico where everyone who isnt white is a "beautiful ray of sunshine".

Gay originally meaned happy/jolly.

In time it also has meant homosexual. It is now often used as a negative word "This homework is gay". And although this use of the word is based upon a negative association with homosexuality I'm not a homophobic but I do use the word "gay" in that same sense. When I do so I'm in no way intending it to relate to homosexuals at all. The word has assumed this meaning over time and that is all I mean when I use it as such. The English language is fluid 🙂

No, it was a Thread from some time back. People in Canada call homogenized milk homo milk in some areas, and the Thread deteriorated from there. 😛

hehehe... i know... i remember the thread 😉 i just thought it was funny and added to the stupidity of THIS thread 😉

<< Yes, what ever someone writes egay they really mean e*homo* Yea, sure....... >>

lol

See? Sometimes there aren't sides. see ^^^

Fleabay works too.

Exactly...It looks like this guy joined AT right around the time the word Ebay was being un-banned. All in all, its continued use is "Heritage, not hatred"

Heh heh...I don't know, a lot of people think Ebay is pretty gerbil if you ask me. 🙂 But this doesn't mean that I don't agre with your last statement:

PEOPLE, PLEASE REMOVE THE STICKS FROM YOUR ARSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What sucked for me was that I couldn't talk about "The Bay Area"
