I tried it out 1/2 year ago, but it did not work on my laptop, but things have changed.

Download ISO. Burn CD. Pop CD in Dell laptop. Boot up in 2 mins. I now have without configuring ANYTHING:

-"Fully" operational Linux OS.
-KDE desktop.
-Sound. Playing MP3's 10 seconds after boot up (includes demos)
-Network.
-100's of great app's.
-No data written to my HD.
-APM operations... see's my battery level, etc.
-Office applications.
-The list goes on... this is amazing!

knoppix.com for those looking.

It comes with Mozilla and Konqueror.

The latest build, Jan 1st, is great. I'm still waiting for Audigy support.

Correct. It's live of the CD-ROM. The browsers that Andy mentioned and LOADS of other cool apps.

You can also install this distribution to your hard drive giving you a 20-minute (or less) install. FAQ

I've also read on the www.knoppix.net forums, that you can use the CD as a terminal server and boot other machines into Knoppix via the network. I haven't gotten it to work here at the house (my broadband router may not allow it), but imagine getting 20 machines up from one CD in no time.

And best of all, it's based on Debian!

I downloaded the latest release ISO the other day and it works even better than the last release I tried. It boots in no time at all, had internet access straight away plus the sound worked too. This program is an amazing piece of programing when you think that the Red Hat 8.0 that I installed on my sons pc comes on three disks. Plus when you finish playing just take out the disk, reboot and you are back in Windows. Painless!

Yes it does rule.....I can't wait till they add audgiy support though. This is actually a good way to use Linux on the go or to just show off what Linux looks like and what it can do to your friends, boss, family members etc.....

Hmm... I have the ISO sitting right on my desk. I think I'm going to pop it in! :D

I also heard that the CD also carries with it a script that allows you to install Knoppix onto your drive. Once installed you can basiclly setup some Deb sources and use apt-get. Knoppix really is just a modified version of Debian that works of a CD along using a pretty neat compressed file-system.

Finally found a fast mirror....got it d/l and burned. It looks pretty sweet, save for it didn't detect my Linksys NIC and I'm not sure how to config it.....it can't even find the thing! Doh! Had sound and stuff and it mounted my windows raid with all my data.

Matt
-redhat n00b, extreeeeem linux n00b

hm, not sure what linksys card, but try modprobe tulip, and then /etc/init.d/networking restart

just a shot in the dark, it might work but it probably wont :p

Tried it like half a year ago and was really surprised how well it works. Everything worked fine (audio, nic, internet, ...) right out of the "box".

Downloaded it. Burned it. Booted from it.

WOW!

That's really cool!

Is there any tool to customize the install for a single machine? For instance... I could boot from my work PC into Linux with this with all the IP info, what drives I want mounted, etc... and then be able to run Linux whenever I want from that work PC in a customized environment without having to install a second OS on a machine that doesn't belong to me.

One problem though....

My machine is a Raid Mirror. The Knoppix disk sees both disks, but not as a RAID Array. If I write to any partition, the mirror will instantly be out of sync, so I've got to be careful.

Posting this from Knoppix.

Wish I knew a way to totally costomize it and then remake an ISO image for my costomized version....

Oh well... still cool!

Load it onto a small drive, make it the way you want, burn it to a disk using Nero's harddrive boot option?

Hmmmm... that sounds doable. Or maybe just create a very small partition on a drive and do just what you said!

Any head-to-head comparisons to SuSE Linux's Live Eval CD?

You can actually install Knoppix to your hard drive.

You can boot other systems into Knoppix via the network ... all from one CD in only one system.

Knoppix is based on Debian.

Knoppix wins. :p

very odd, 8139 cards are probably the most abundant cards around...

OK I got by the driver install OK, but no joy getting DHCP to configure properly.
