What in the world are you talking about?! I've dabbled in the world of car audio (
much more demanding than computer audio, let me tell you) for 8 years now and I can tell you that there's nothing wrong with a 100W amplifier for a subwoofer. Now, understandably, some subs won't sound as good/work as well with only 100 watts powering them, but 100W is more than enough to push a decent 6 1/2" driver, especially if the enclosure is built right. In fact, I bought a set of OZ Audio components in my car (composed of 2 x 6 1/2" woofers and 2 x 3/4" tweeters) that were rated to handle 150W RMS power (7 years ago, mind you). These were competition-level speakers costing ~$450 brand new. They sounded incredible with 150W running to them.
Wait until you actually
hear the sub before you judge how it will sound. You just cannot tell.
Edit:
The high-output, low distortion subwoofer is a bass-reflex type with a tuned rear port and a 6.5-inch front-firing woofer.
Having now read the article, this enclosure is exactly the one to use to get the most bass out of your sub. Plus, the tuned rear port (if they did this right) will give the sub the right kind of response at the frequencies that it's needed most. According to the specs, this should be around the 35Hz - 80Hz range.
