:Q

I was just looking for a decent 5.1 setup with decoder for a small room mini HT setup...these might just fit the bill.

:)

Ew, I thought that those were just concept designs from the post at 3DSoundSurge.

Them is some ulgy-@ss bitches!

You can buy a Onkyo home theater HTB-650 something for $450, and Klipsch can suck it.

The 100-watt linear A/B amplifier is housed inside the subwoofer and the bass unit also features an SWS? Link connection for daisy-chaining multiple subwoofers

So do these make my PM 5.1s officially obsolete?...

Nothing rated at 100 watts total makes a promedia 5.1 setup obselete. I realize there is a lot more to speakers than wattage, but 100 watts for 5 speakers and a subwoofer is really, really pushing it. These will likely be targetted at about half the price of the PM 5.1's.

Ha! Well it says $299... that's why i was assuming it was a replacement for the PM 5.1s... well it wouldn't match my computer anyway since its silver...

Agreed on the first part, but:

Reasonably priced ($299 U.S. MSRP), the Klipsch ProMedia GMX D-5.1 will be available for purchase from the Klipsch web store (www.klipsch.com) or from Best Buy, Circuit City and CompUSA stores nationwide.
300 bucks is hardly half the price of Klipsch's top-o-line. I'm thinking these are being targeted towards the Macusers who want their whole system to "look good" as well as get ripped off and this proves it:
?The GMX system is truly a beautiful machine,? said Casavant. ?The combination of its textures, ergonomics and superior functionality make it unique in the multimedia market. I think it is the audio equivalent to the Beetle or iMac or Alienware Area 51 computer, and we believe that when the buying public sees this product it will have a significant impact.?

That 100 watts applies only to the subwoofer.

EDIT: I made a mistake. The subwoofer of ProMedia 5.1 is rated a 170 Watts. The maximum burst power of the entire system is 500 watts.

OKay,

So they broke off the sub so you could buy/stack them seperately. However is it just me or would everybody who already has the 5.1s rather have the saucer (Digital decoder/preamplifier [control module])? The current 169$ DD-5.1 has the same inputs (i think) but this is cooler looking and does DPL II,

My ProMedia 5.1s still do the job, however ild like to be able to attach my PS2 or Cable to that, and the only way to do that is with a reciever with pre-outs apparently, so my receiver wouldnt work. =(

This saucer thing would do the job just fine.

What in the world are you talking about?! I've dabbled in the world of car audio (much more demanding than computer audio, let me tell you) for 8 years now and I can tell you that there's nothing wrong with a 100W amplifier for a subwoofer. Now, understandably, some subs won't sound as good/work as well with only 100 watts powering them, but 100W is more than enough to push a decent 6 1/2" driver, especially if the enclosure is built right. In fact, I bought a set of OZ Audio components in my car (composed of 2 x 6 1/2" woofers and 2 x 3/4" tweeters) that were rated to handle 150W RMS power (7 years ago, mind you). These were competition-level speakers costing ~$450 brand new. They sounded incredible with 150W running to them.

Wait until you actually hear the sub before you judge how it will sound. You just cannot tell.

Edit:
The high-output, low distortion subwoofer is a bass-reflex type with a tuned rear port and a 6.5-inch front-firing woofer.
Having now read the article, this enclosure is exactly the one to use to get the most bass out of your sub. Plus, the tuned rear port (if they did this right) will give the sub the right kind of response at the frequencies that it's needed most. According to the specs, this should be around the 35Hz - 80Hz range.

Looking through the Feb. 2003 issue of Maximum PC, they talk about these new speakers and say this "A new 6.5-inch subwoofer features an enclosure design that Klipsch says is more efficient-and produces more bass- than the previous ProMedia 5.1 sub."

So I am really curious to hear these and see how they compare to the current 5.1's... I have wanted a pair of Klipsch's for quite some time, but for one reason or another I have never purchased a set, and I am still sitting here with my 5(!) year old Cambridge Soundworks 3 piece setup that are still sounding halfway decent....

I really do not like the new design for this Promedia set. I much prefer the design of the old Promedias like my 4.1s which I would say have the classic luxury look. This makes them look like really cheap speakers that are being sold to the iMac crowd.
