Kitchen remodeling.

Any ideas on how much it would cost to put in marble countertop? What is better? Marble, granite... (Copper alloys?! It kills germs; Science Friday is cool)

Just wondering. Anyone have pictures of their before/after kitchen remodeling, or new countertops?

Somewhere between $500 and $20000 depending on a thousand factors you haven't mentioned.

Let's start with size...

$399.

thats it. if anyone tells you anything else they have no clue what they are talking about.

Marble is soft and rarely used in kitchen counters. Granite is harder and the most common. Quartz is the hardest, and most durable, but it's pricey.

I'm looking at remodeling right now with some basic granite counters from this brand for around $14 a square foot for the color we are interested in.

Keep in mind that counters are a little over 2' deep so your cost per linear foot is a little more than double what your square foot costs are. So for us, a linear foot is just short of $30 per foot.

Typical granite costs for more unique/popular colors is more in the $30-$60 a square foot. This stuff is very basic and has some installation quirks that we are accomindating for.

Quartz goes for $65+ a sq/ft. Corian/Silestone is around the same price and has it's own pro's/cons. And with all of these estimates, you also have to figure in the cost of labor, delivery, sinks, backsplashes, ect.

Probably one of the better values I saw was at Lowes. Formica has a Corian alternative that came with very nice moulded in sink, bullnosed edges, and installed for around $60 a sq/foot. That was a pretty good value for including labor, sink, and delivery.

get quartz btw... More hygnic and you dont have to polish...

If it were me i would get an artificial solid surface....

Totally spaced(as in forgot) size. It's not huge... You know, I had a dream last night that we bought a good house and not the one we are actually buying. :'( I was so happy too.

Clueless, I am. I'll just take a guess at 60SQFT of countertop. That seems kinda normal sized, right?

The only thing with granite is that you do need to seal it a few times a year. And it is a little sensitive to acidic substances and polishing agents (like sink cleaners) that can wear down the polish. But otherwise it's a very durable, classy looking surface with character.

I'm in the process of redoing mine for about $5,000.

And that's with a pretty good number of glazed maple cabinets, granite counters, and a new sink and tile backsplashes.

Appliances aren't being replaced luckily.

most full kitchen remodel cost around $40k-$50k, don't ask me how, that's the figure I keep hearing, anything around $20k is 'cheap'.

IIRC, one of those shows on either TLC or HGTV said marble is softer and more porous than granite, so there is higher chance of staining from spills and denting, and requires more diligent maintenance.

The house we bought has granite, though had we built from the ground, we would have considered something like corian as well.

I think I spent around $15k to remodel mine. New tile, cabinets, appliances, and granite counter tops.

I work for a homebuilder so I was able to use some of our contractors for a much better price. It would have been easily over $20k otherwise.

I did a total gut/remodel on my kitchen 7 or 8 years ago for ~$8k, but I was the whole labor force. The only thing I didn't install myself was the countertop. Wave walls and no square corners = pay to have it templated and installed. ESPECIALLY on higher-dollar surfaces. If you're installing and you break it, you're screwed.

Edit: roughly $4k of that was cabinets, and the fridge was NOT replaced.

Is it alternator sized?

Yeah.. We're never going to remodel our kitchen with anything, I guess. 🙁 It's not really worth it in such a house anyway. There are tons of other things we need to fix first.

what..?

Seems like a lot of these home remodel shows run in the $20k-$60k range to do your standard tile floor, granite counters, stainless appliances, new sink and new lighting

I hope to start mine this summer and will surely keep the cost down, $5k at most on cabinets, floor will be done and the appliances are a year old so they are ok. I will rip it to the studs and redo electrical, add lighting, install nailers for cabinets, drywall, and install cabinets.

If by chip and crack easy you mean routinely beating them with a chisel hammer and by frequent sealing you mean yearly...then yes you are pretty accurate.
