I am really interested in quartz. Any way to get that cheaper?

Interesting idea. There are a lot of people in the area who do have a lot of money for these kinds of things ;) (PDX area)

Why are you asking? Your parents are not going to spend this much money to renovate their kitchen and you shouldn't care b/c you're only living their for another year or two.

It's called having dreams and goals. >_< It is useful information because I would like to know more about it so when I actually get a home I can be a bit wiser about it all.

I redid my kitchen for $2000.

New countertops: $250. Yes, I was lured by granite and quartz, but then I realized that for $5000 less, I can get laminite that looks exactly the same from a couple feet away. I suppose I might have to replace them in 20 years, and get new laminite counters, but I'd still be $4750 ahead.

New sink and faucet: $200. I too was interested in the really expensive stuff, but I got something attractive and highly functional. I went with a deep sink (10" if I remember correctly) and a high arch on the faucet. I can stick anything in there and fill it up. Plus, I made sure to get straight sides and a nearly flat bottom. Thus, I can use every square inch of the sink and never have anything tip over and break.

New lighting: $30. I replaced the center light and I installed halogen lights under the cabinet.

New real wood blinds: $200. Note: my mom works for an interior designer, and otherwise this would have cost $400.

New fridge, oven, and microwave: $1350. I got maximum function / minimum price items. They are a quality brand from Sears, so I don't think they are bad. But I just didn't pay $5000 extra for a "look".

Removing wallpaper and buying new paint: $50.

Sold old appliances: -$75. I could have gotten more, but I just wanted them out of there.

Total: $2005.

Luckilly I didn't need to replace the cabinets or floor. Although a simple reface doesn't cost that much. I've redone floors in the past and it would have only added a few hundred dollars.

Yeah, I don't like laminate at all. It's very easy to burn that stuff. I want to get granite at least. :p

I've put boiling hot pots on the laminate - no problem. I've never taken stuff right out of the oven though and put that on the countertop. That would probably harm it. Even with granite, I'd use an oven mit for the pot out of habit. It isn't that easy to burn. And if you did burn it, you can reface laminite for a few dollars or replace it for $250ish.

 Didn't you drop out of school and don't know what you want to do? Have you even found a part-time job yet?

Time to come back to reality. Ten years from now(if you're lucky), you think you're going to remember this thread.

I didn't drop out, no. o_O I am not sure what I want to do. I rather figure out what I want to do than waste money. Nope, not a lot of places are hiring.
