ah hell. one of the nice guys out there.. dammit.

Here's a lesson for the kids out there: you can beat the ever-living sh!t out of your wife and people will still think you're a good guy if you were good at playing sports.

Being a Minnesotan I got the chance to meet him at a youth event years ago. He was really cool. During the 87 and 91 series he was just outstanding! Despite the fact he had personal problems he will be greatly missed here in MN. Definitely one of the greatest in baseball! Touch em all Kirby!!!

From the Star-Trib article

Not all was as well in Puckett's personal life. His seemingly impeccable image began to tarnish in 2002, as details emerged from divorce proceedings with his wife, Tonya Puckett, who alleged that he had abused her and threatened to kill her.

Puckett said it wasn't true, but allegations from other women soon followed. He relinquished most ties to the Twins, moved his permanent residence to Arizona and disappeared from the public view.

...

Then, in September 2002, Puckett was involved in a very public incident at Redstone American Grill in Eden Prairie. That time, a woman accused Puckett of dragging her into a restroom and grabbing her breast.

After a nine-day trial, a jury ruled Puckett not guilty of false imprisonment, fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct and fifth-degree assault.

Except for (and up until) those accusations (I say that because I don't remember if they were proven true or not), he was thought of a great person as well. So, it wasn't simply because he was a great ballplayer. While he was playing, everyone loved him on and off the field.

RIP Kirby.

Yeah, you're right. You CAN beat the ****** out of your wife and be considered a great person--as long as you keep it hidden from the public.

Incredible talent, loved on and off the field. He was a one of a kind, possibly one of the best contact hitters ever (see: more hits in history after 10 years than anyone)

I also think its sad that he died, that he died young, and that the last years of his life were a downward spiral. All that weight he gained had to have been largely responsible for the stroke.

And the accusations, I dont know how true or not true they are.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
I'm sure most fans would rather not think about him as a criminal, but rather remember him for the guy they want to remember him as.

The fact that so many women made statements about his questionable behavior, makes me wonder though.
How do you Kirby fans deal with this? Do you not believe its true? Do you try to ignore it?

I thought it was 3 women? Mistress, ex, and Twins exec. He may have threatened them, but I doubt he really beat anyone like some people try to say. I don't think it makes him any less of a man, it makes him human. Many great athletes have done much worse, and yet never attained the icon status that Kirby did.

maybe it was only 3. i dont know, i just hope he didnt actually sexually assualt any of them. i know many athletes have done worse and thats just sad. i just hope what the people here are saying isnt true, where if you do well in a sport it seems to clear that bad stuff from your name, i dont think it should.

but in kirby's case, it seems like a lot of speculation, without anything proven.
