Kinnect - Killer App?

I picked up a Kinnect 3-4 months ago and so far me and my son really enjoy it. Of course, the only game we have is Kinnect Adventures. We pretty much do Reflex Ridge exclusively, although he likes to do the River Run when playing by himself.

The primary reason for picking up the Kinnect was for exercise. My son has too much energy and in the winter that is not a good thing. I also wanted something different to do than running on my treadmill for cardio. Reflex Ridge is great for an HIIT type workout. I do a lot of running, sprinting and Reflex Ridge is just as capable of getting the heart rate near max levels.

With that said, is there any other 'fun' games that actually require a lot of physical effort? Based on my searches, I couldn't really see anything that was 'good'. Even the Kinnect Sports was pretty weak when I tried it out. Seems like Kinnect is a very great piece of technology without software to really make it shine. It is a shame, because I think they could do so much more with it... Suggestions for a game or an upcoming game in development would be great.

Another vote for Fruit Ninja. I think that game is garbage on smartphones but surprisingly awesome on the Kinect.

It’s funny, I find just the opposite to be true. I have a hard time even accessing some menus on that game because I can't get to them without going over another menu and "slashing" it...

The hardest part about playing Fruit Ninja is that it really showed me that I needed to make sure that I had my overhead lights on. My shadow kept popping in and out when I only had some dimmer lights on that were a bit further away (they provided more than enough light to see). Once I turned the overhead lights on, it was much better.

That light issue might explain why I've had a lot of trouble in other Kinect games.

But anyway... Fruit Ninja will definitely get you moving. It's a little easy at first, but eventually they'll toss a lot of fruit at you. I picked the game up for $13 with The Gunstringer off eBay. It was a download code, so getting it was pretty quick.

You're right--the menus do need to be revised so you're not always accidentally slashing things. I can't believe those made it past play testing.

The Kinect version's multiplayer modes and the ability to kick fruit (yes, that does actually work if you're flexible enough and have enough room in your play space) can lead to some major hilarity.

Hoping this will be Steel Battalion 2. No such game currently exists that I would label as a Kinect "killer app".

Dance games and a $.99 iOS game? At least they spent $500m on marketing, it seems to have worked.

It's a "success" for no reason other than marketing. It had mass appeal (for NO reason) and it sold insanely well.

With that said, Dance Central is about the only thing I feel like it has a use for.

My two favorite days owning a kinect was the day I bought it, and the day I unplugged it so it would stop doing random shit to my mass effect 3 game due to background nose.
