Stop bitching and turn your shit off during take off and landing. Have plenty of time to read on your device during flight.

Also, since when do men buy kindles?

I think the issue with the kindle is that it has text on the screen, even though it's off. No, or very little, electricity is coursing through the device, and therefore there is no real chance of it interfering with the airplane's electronics/telecommunications.

Yeah, try explaining that to a stewardess. Just turn it over, read the shitty airplane magazine and let the lady clear the plane. When she is in the back, seated for takeoff, turn it back over and keep reading. If she starts walking around again, turn it back over and go to the airplane magazine. If you have time during the middle of the flight, try to explain the workings of the kindle and the magic of eInk.

She probably won't follow you, as she is a stewardess.

I don't see what the big deal is. Just stop being an a-hole and turn it off. If you are so bothered by it, catch a train. You knew the rules before your simple @ss got on the plane anyway, so like a twit you give the lady a hard time for doing her job. She should have called the air marshall and got your little twirp @ss tazed, cavity searched, and jailed.

wtf is it that fucking hard for you assholes to follow simple directions? just turn off the damn electronics when they ask you to do so, it's only for like 10-15 minutes anyways.

if you don't like their rules then don't fly with them.

404 Federal Regulations not found.

This is gonna blow your mind, but even you sheep lovers have federal regulations relating to the use of portable electronic devices in flight. In fact, it's a fair bet that if the FAA and/or the European authority mandates/prohibits something, EVERY other flight regulatory agency has at least the same rule in effect.

Your own New Zealand rule:

91.7 Portable electronic devices
(a) No person may operate, nor may any operator or pilot-incommand
of an aircraft allow the operation of, any cellphone or other
portable electronic device that is designed to transmit electromagnetic
energy, on any aircraft while that aircraft is operating under IFR.

Bahhh Bahhhhhhh OMFG BAAHHHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

And here's one of your Advisory Circulars, mirrored after the FAA, for good measure

Short answer: Turn your fucking electronics off when told to do so.

I like the posters who think flight attendants enjoy bitching about stupid things like some guy listening to his zune.

believe me, if they didn't have to they wouldn't

At the end of the day the federal regulations haven't caught up with the reality of what electronic devices are currrently out there. A kindle with wireless turned off isn't going to interfer with a airplane during talk off. I for one think that if a consumer device could interfer with a airplane then there is a design problem with the airplane itself. Seriously how many people on a daily basis probably leave there cell phones on "accidentially" on a airplane during talk off, landing etc and there is no issues? Eventually the laws will change however the flight attentendant is just enforcing the regulations. Arguing with her is just a waste of time. I have heard that some people will put a cover on there kindle that conceals it some and then they can get away with it.

You don't need a cover for the Kindle, you just have to hold the power switch on for 4 seconds or longer, and the display goes blank. It's not really that complicated.

It doesn't matter. Much easier to just say "turn off all electronic devices" and that way you insure no problems no matter the device. The law isn't going to change because it's a catch all to cover all circumstances and a rock solid countermeasure to the possibility of interference.

You device could be malfunctioning, this rule covers that any any interference.

To be fair to the flight attendant she likely doesn't know anything about technology and is just doing her job. The ones to get angry at are the airlines and regulators for such a stupid 0 tolerance policy on electronics. There really is no good evidence that any consumer electronic device has ever caused any problems on a flight. I know there have been a few "incidents" but none of these have any real evidence to back them up. The thing is to play it safe they have said we should turn off any device that sends out wireless signals like cell phones and wifi devices etc. However it's not possible to train the attendants to know the operational modes of all the electronic devices out there. So just to be paranoid they ask you to turn everything off.

Yell out air? Isn't that inherent to the act, expelling air from your lungs to form sound?

This thread is highly enjoyable.

Maybe he's just trying to cover all bases. I for one often post in a vacuum.

I was more indicating that if you have sometype of cover it will not appear as a Kindle to the untrained eye. You are then less likely to get asked to turn off the device if the flight attendant doesn't even identify it as a electronic device.

Same thing happened with me on my flight from NY to ATL. There i was minding my own business listening to my Zune 120 gb with wireless off and the stewardess comes by and say please turn off all electronic devices and wait until we take off. I hit the pause button waited till she walked away then continued listening, same thing happened one more time finally i just shut it off so she would fuck off... Flight attendants can be such bitches. What, you think I want to blow up the plane?

Not the same thing. During take off and landing you are not allowed to have headphones on. Some stupid thing about being able to hear during (or even before) an emergency.

I disagree. Some of them love being bitches. Some people love abusing their real (or perceived) power.

You need to listen to Adam Carolla more.

I can see many of the people here have not used a Kindle. Turning it off puts a screensaver on. The device is off, but a screen remains. Welcome to the world of eink. You can clear it by holding the button for a while but it's not really recommended. It's sort of like pulling the power cord out on your computer after you shut down.

If it was that easy to interfer with a airplane. Maybe if I was a terrorist I should carry several malfunctioning electronic devices and leave them in my pocket, turned on during take off and landing to cause a plane crash? I will say it again. If any personal electronic device can cause issues with airplane equipment then the equipment manufacturer needs to be called to task. Remember the big to do that cell phones can cause interferrance with airplane equipment. Now they are talking about removing this restriction above 10,000 feet. However there is more talk about not wanting to disturb your fellow travellers over any safety issue that the cell phone would cause.

I remember with hospitals they used to say no cell phones could be used, because they could interfer with gear, period any where in the hospital. Of course you would be standing there and the doctors cell phone would ring and the nurse that just told you no cell phone's would look at you and shrug their shoulders. Now I know the hospitals around me are starting to relax that. I remember back in 2004 when my first child was born we where shocked when the nurse told us that we could make cell phone calls from the labor delivery room. So I suspect eventually things will change.

FWIW, one of the first questions Garmin International technical support will ask if you report an intermittent failure of one of their aviation GPS Navs is, "Did anyone in the plane not turn off their iPhone?" Cellphone interference with GPS in aircraft is a documented problem, in part because as the aircraft gains altitude the cellphone ramps up its transmitter power to maintain contact with the increasingly distant cell towers. Spurious emissions in the GPS frequency band increase at the same rate as the nominal cell frequency.

You seem to be the only one who actually got my point so far :p The Kindle IS OFF when it's doing nothing but displaying a page. I'm happy to turn off my electronic devices, but telling me to "turn off" a Kindle is just stupid.
