I'd agree if we weren't talking about such extreme limitations. If the KF had say, 32GB of storage- great. Even 16GB available would suffice. But 5GB? It's just too little. Forget movies and music- even a couple of decent 3D games with 600MB data files will eat through that in no time.

Streaming is great- I use it a lot on my phone. But my phone also has 3G and isn't totally dependent on WiFi access. For me, the double-whammy of too little onboard storage plus no guarantee of always-on connectivity means the micro SD card slot wins.

And it's not like I can't do most of the same streaming via the NT as well. If I'm not mistaken, I think even Amazon's has been made to work on the NT. I don't know for sure, I use Subsonic to stream my home media to my NT.

I have tethering for my phone - I pay an extra $20/month which gets me tethering + an additional 2GB of data. Essentially a slightly better deal than paying $25 for a monthly iPad data plan (with the downside that it impacts my smartphone battery life as well). So to me, considering every platform has tethering these days, the lack of the 3G option isn't a huge deal.

I've been using the Amazon app store since it was first released and I have the majority of those free paid apps (which includes some large games) - so with those installed on my Fire plus the aforementioned movie I downloaded, I still have 4.46 GB free. Also my device status says 6.54 GB is available, not 5GB.

I realize storage could be a deal breaker for some...but it certainly isn't for me.

Nice, hadn't thought of that with a tablet. Is it possible to tether the KF? For that matter I wonder if it is for the NT. If so, that'd be awesome.

Do Android games exist with 600 MB of data files? Yikes, the biggest ones I've seen were Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies at around 75 MB each.

Assuming you can set up tethering on your phone, there's nothing preventing the NT or KF from benefiting from it. When you set up your phone as a wireless hotspot, it just shows up as another wifi network to connect to. The only stumbling block is that some carriers are more strict about stopping tethering than others - they might block you from doing so unless you pay them extra. Depends on the carrier though.

There were a couple JRPGs that broke the 1GB mark a while back. Its like the 1990s again. 😛 OMG! 1GB install!? Thats huge.

Yeah, a few Gameloft titles like Asphalt 6 HD, ShadowGun, Nova 2 have huge download files in the 500 to 600MB range.

Ah okay, I'm a noob when it comes to tethering. The only way I've done it is with easyTether that involves literally tethering the phone to another device via USB cable, using the phone as a modem. I'm probably wrong, but I didn't think the carrier could detect it. I used ET for weeks this past summer with no problems at all- cost me $9 for the app.

For most of the tethering apps now, you have to install or sideload the apk manually. They are usually filtered out the Market by the carrier. Most of the 'common' ones are also blocked by carriers now because they are easily identifiable.

Koush(Rom Manager, DesktopSMS) is working a new project regarding tethering now.

so poles say the fire is better, i need to know because im thinking of giveing my wife the fire for a chrimas gift.

It's almost Christmas, so I think he meant the North Pole. Do you know anyone who lives on the North Pole who doesn't prefer Fire?

I tried out the Fire on display at Super Target over the weekend and was very impressed with the interface and responsiveness.

The Fire and nook tablet don't meet my needs, but they'll be quite successful.

Just saw a prediction of 6 million Fires being sold this quarter. That's a ton of merchandise.

All devices get software updates....that's generally considered a good thing.

This. I'm not the biggest fan of the Fire, though I'm positive that Amazon will support it for some time.

FYI, an update was just released for the Nook Color that brings Netflix and several other features to it, version 1.41. It brings it more in line with the features of its bigger brother, the Nook Tablet
