NiCad technology has improved. They used to have the memory effect but the ones they make these days don't. Well, shouldn't. NiMH may not have a memory effect but my SlimX CD/MP3 portable has instructions to fully discharge the batteries once a month for maximum life. The unit has an option to discharge before beginning the charge cycle.

I like the idea of being able to charge batteries for my camera if I'm on a roadtrip....I'm getting this one.

Yeah, you're talking about their C batteries. I figure to get this. Maybe a 12 pack of AA's, too. Only need 4 C's, however.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

But these are NiMH rechargeables right? So why would anyone need more than what their device will use, + a backup set?

So my Olympus camrea uses 4 batteries, so 8 is the absolute most I would ever need right? So why are they selling them in 50 packs? I must be missing something.

Answers:

1) You're a business.

2) *** You have a wife and extended family like mine that has never seen a battery-operated toy they didn't buy and give to my kidlets. ***

BYD is a wholesale business from their point of view. They accommodate bulk orders in the quantities they prepackage for you (as seen on the website), and do mail order only - no pickups.

OK, here's a real good question, folks: With NiCads (I believe) there's a definite shelf life of batteries. IOW, if you buy some and just put them on a shelf, they will go bad (or at least lose their ability to hold a charge) after a period of time. In constant usage, your NiCads will last maybe 5 years, less if you don't use (charge/discharge) them frequently. You might get somewhat longer usage out of them, but not more than a couple years. That's the way it was maybe 10 years ago and I realize that battery technology has advanced. For instance, the famous memory effect of NiCads is said to be a thing of the past with recent vintage NiCads.

How about NiMH? Do these have a shelf life too? Or can you buy some and feel certain that you can start using them in 5 years and get the same performance as if you bought them and started using them today? Anybody know?

Anybody wanna split 12AAA and 24 AA? I'm in the Raleigh, NC area -- prefer somebody local to avoid reshipping hassles.

PM or email to charles_d at mail dot com

Has any one used these batteries? It's a little to late for me, I order a 24 pack and charger/battery combo. I would like know how they hold up so I can recommend them. It's a great price almost to good.

You're talking about the BYD site? I just generated an order, and prior to entering CC number, it showed my shipping for ~$39 worth of batteries to be $4.56 for UPS ground (the lowest shown). I'm in Berkeley, CA. How do you get free shipping in CA for Dec.?

I can't testify to the quality of the batteries yet but the ordering process at BYD was smooth and man are they fast. I ordered the charger/batteries combo and some extra CR123 Li batteries for my IS binocs at 8:15AM this morning and received an email that the order had shipped at 12:45PM.
