Because, now you can copy the steps without learning them.
I now looked at the video without skipping parts and it's pretty cool indeed, like wolfram alpha but with also text detection.
It's not different from copying homework.

Although I must say it's the next level in cheating with a smartphone in high school exams, some people have been sending pics outside to a friend, no need with this app.

That's pretty cool. There is definitely more resources out there these days with the internet, and apps etc. Good in a way, bad in another. Do they even teach stuff like long division, multiplication etc these days by hand? Or is it all common core BS now? That confused the hell out of me when I saw an example online.

Speaking of math I remember this time we had this homework assignment that had like 50+ problems that were basically the same concept. I did the first 10 to make sure I understand the concept, once I figured I had enough practice and I understood it, I wrote a C++ program where I could input the formula and it would spit out the solution showing the work, so it was faster and I just had to copy down the output.

I had a four banger for the longest time, when I got a scientific that was super epic! Actually I found it in a box somewhere recently and it actually still worked. Crazy how long those little cell batteries last.

If your phone can solve it for you there's no need to learn the steps. If a person is in a math-heavy field that's something they can do in their sleep and for 99.9% of people it's not something they need at all. Teaching algebra these days is about as necessary as forcing kids to memorize the birthdays of every king of France as part of a history class. What's the point?

I think knowing and understanding basic algebra is still important, but to me that is where it should stop. All the math after that is ridiculously overcomplicated and 99% of people will never use it. What I did hate the most is having to memorize formulas, zero point in doing that. I'm sure even people that work at NASA have cheat sheets for that stuff, there is no point in trying to memorize stuff that you can look up. Planing something like a rocket launch by using stuff you memorized is a recipe for disaster, you always want to double check against known correct information.

Tell me about it! My grandma bought me my one and only scientific calculator for Christmas circa '96 and that thing still powers on! I don't think I ever replaced the batteries. Although, it is solar powered as well. But I doubt incandescent lights would power it.

That perspective is total bullshit! You are right that learning the steps isn't what's important but, you cannot learn and internalize mathematical relationships without learning the steps. The overriding importance of learning math in the first place is to gain perspective. The bottom line is you won't know how to frame the question let alone, what numbers to punch in to your calculator without learning the steps.

Learning advanced math like trig or calculus isn't just about "learning math" in the technical sense. It is about learning how to problem solve. And people who are better at problem solving are general smarter than people who aren't.

Once upon a time some guys went to the moon using slide rules.

;)

Yeah. And they wrote the complete works of Shakeapeare, perform brain surgery, end slavery, solve crimes and fight fires without using algebra. Some people need math and use math, the vast majority don't.

Math is all about broadening your horizons. Just because you seem to be math challenged doesn't mean the majority don't need or want more possibilities.

Yes of course and that's fine, if someone wants to of course they can study it more but there's no need for math past algebra in general education college/University unless you want to study in that area.

Sounds a little defeatist to me.

What do you suggest kids take in highschool then? I was in advanced math so I didn't even take algebrae in highschool. I started with geometry, then algebrae 2, then pre-calc, then AP calc.

By this same thought process though, there's really no need to take american history, chemistry, biology, physics, etc, if you don't plan on going into that direction with a career.
