It’s a serious question if you say only the good ones should be helped how do you determine when they should be helped? How much suffering over what duration is enough for someone to be worthy of help?

So.... 47 angels you say? :p (knock yourself out)

The sad/amusing thing here is that you and I are on the same side of this argument. (I realize that must be disappointing)

Here.... you rate this nearly as much as I do! ;)

...
It's a shame that in America we only try to fix problems like this after the fact but that changes nothing in terms of results.

PLENTY of people grow up in tough circumstances with messed up or absent parents but somehow manage not to shoot up any schools or malls and those are the people that deserve help.

Yes, for the given experiment a solid 16.9% will manage to navigate the environmental maze and make something happen for themselves.
If you were to rearrange the experiment though, that number could jump to the high 80'ies.
Its a numbers game. Quantity. The error you make, in my opinion, is with the bolded part you dig into quality of an individual and from there use that example to qualify the whole. That's not how these numbers work.

At the end of the day I just see a massive waste of resources.

I'm 60 years old and have seen some things.... it can (and does!) make one a tad cynical!

;)

Sadly there are some folks that cannot be helped and one "downside" of our modern society that allows nearly everyone to survive to adulthood (largely courtesy of emergency-medicine and helmets!) is that we have quite a few of them "out and about" that in the past would have been "Darwin-awarded" out of the gene-pool. (quite possibly including yours truly!)

:p

The wasted resources IMO are those spent attempting to "fix" people who have no desire to be fixed. (on-topic this would be the parents)

If parents can't be held responsible within reason for the actions of minor (pre-teen in particular) children in their care, then who can? You and I? The immature child?

Right now it seems like the answer is purely reaction "after the fact" phony shock despite the signs often being pretty obvious had anyone been paying significant attention.

Again, its a numbers game and one where empathy must be a co-pilot to reason. Its quite possible the current crop is lost, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make next season viable, salvage whats possible of this season.

Yep. The crime wave affecting the cities isn't because of "soft on crime" elected officials or any similar narrative. It's because of politicized police unions that are holding the cities hostage and refusing to do their jobs until their preferred officials get elected.
Yes. If you look at the ‘crime wave’ that happened in San Francisco that got the DA recalled it was basically that the cops decided to stop doing their jobs. They are public employees paid with tax dollars and they decided since they didn’t like the new leadership they wouldn’t quit, they would just keep taking taxpayer money and not do the job.

I think a grand bargain is in order. Let’s increase pay for cops but in exchange the union goes away and we can fire cops for dereliction of duty or misconduct.

Boudin wasn't well liked for other reasons. the main issues gripping cities like sf or nyc or chicago are police can be useless at times when they are needed the most. like most gov jobs of today they find it easy to hang on their iphones and treat their shifts as recess with their buddy aka partner. for them the paperwork for shoplifting, grafiti, public sex or intoxication, public defecation or relieving etcetra isn't worth their time. it's not like this in every city fortunately.

Devil's advocate checking in! ;)

Bad as they can be, take the cops completely away and let me know how that works out. (you'll be able to reach me via email in the bunker where I'll be hiding lol.... long as there's still an internet!)

What's wilding to pcgeek type folk? Does he drink shitty beer and dress up like a duck and his wife shoots him in the ass with non-lethal shotgun pellets? After chasing him around the yard?

Maybe that's how they celebrate after voting for people that constantly oppress others and enable gun violence.

fuck the shareholders. Private prisons are a menace and a driving force for police to lock up people for the silliest of charges when actual criminals exist out there.
You know, I really didn't think that post required a /s tag, but evidently I was mistaken.

That is the stupidest thing you have written yet. And that takes some doing.

If we're being fair, voting for Trump in particular (or ANY MAGA Republican) for ANY reason these days is awfully tough to justify for a person with a properly functioning brain.

Haha. Fox News drops new on Lemon while remaining silent about Carlson.

Wonder why right wingers remain ignorant?

I started completely blocking Fox and affiliates a LONG time ago.... nothing I need to hear from those scumbags ever again. I hope they go bust.
