Kids' choice vs. my dignity

We are in the market for a couple of cars. My two boys (6 & 4) love Transformers. A 6-speed G37 Sedan was on the short list and today (as everyone was watching Transformers for the 100th time) my wife suggested a yellow Camaro with black stripes (Bumblebee) and the boys went nuts.

As a weekend car I would understand the appeal but not as a daily driver. I am too old and in my profession I would probably be ridiculed if I showed up driving a Camaro especially in a suit. 🙁

We have already nixed the idea of ever buying a minivan but I think this might bee (sic) too extreme. It's bad enough to have the ubiquitous Corvette as a mid-life crisis car but certainly no Camaro right?

Hopefully their next favorite theme/show isn't Dora. :\

I'd buy a blacked-out 2011 Mustang 5.0 (Barricade in Transformers) over a Camaro any day.

Get a blue and red peterbilt 379.

that would be a nice commuter. 🙂 They would shit bricks if they got to go to school like that.

Unfortunately due to close-by grandparents; the kids have just about every Transformer toy that is readily available but only seem to like the Autobots. As far as a budget I wanted to stay around $35K.

I'd go with a black V6...or V8 if you like da power.

Besides, who the fucking cares what your co-workers think? I knew a guy who liked Saabs, everyone thought he had shitty taste in cars but he still had a job...

It's hard to be too old for a Camaro, and what profession could it be that bad? Sure, yellow and black would be a bit silly, but get a color you want, and your coworkers can go screw themselves.

Or, better yet, you're the parent, you're the one driving the car every day, go buy the car you want.

So you want a $35k Statement car without looking like a redneck.

Buy a Taurus SHO. Should be able to get an easy $3-5K off MSRP as they are not selling well.

I'll also suggest a Pontiac G8 GT or Chrysler 300C SRT8.

Buddy of mie has a kid on the way and just installed LT headers, intake, and full exahust on his 2010 Camaro SS. Dynod 364 to the wheels.

I disliked it before the modifications and now its loud, obnxious, and uncomfortable.

* Your only option for a muscle-car with a usable back-seat is the Dodge Challenger. Very comfortable back seat and great driver comfort!

+1 for the G8 GT. Metallic Grey/Panther Black and the White look great.

I got the metallic grey.

It's a good cruiser, a bit of a sleeper and there and some folks out there selling some nicely modded ones for absolutely sick prices (http://forum.grrrr8.net/forumdisplay.php?f=97).

It's roomy enough for everyone, decently sized trunk and comfy seats. I've enjoyed mine.

i think OP wants a manual guys. I was serious about the mustang suggestion. You really can't beat the hp/buck.

If you like the Camaro then get one. Maybe skip the yellow w/black stripes though. Test drive one and see if you like it.

5.0 Mustang.

Tell the kids to focus more on their school work and less on your car choices. That way they get a scholarship and you can buy an Aston Martin when they move out.

I was hoping to turn one of them in to a left-handed starting pitcher. Then they could move out and buy me an Aston Martin. 😀 Since they are now both right-handed they will have the option of any other career paths; as long as it is a doctor, engineer (PhD), or attorney.

I'm not looking for a 'statement' car. I just want something that looks decent and has a little power. Since my wife hates automatics, I need a 6 speed.
I really liked the G8 GTX but I thought they were discontinued.
The SHO seems nice but it is huge and I don't think a manual is available.
The 335i as I priced it is closer to $45K and I couldn't find a manual or sunroof option.

I know a few engineers with Phds that work in industry. All but one regret spending the time to get it. They pretty much all feel that the difference between the Phd and masters didn't warrant the extra work and the pay difference isn't as much as you would think. The starting salary is a bit different but many times there is very little differentiation between a guy with a masters or a guy with a phd if they both have similar experience.

If you want them to be professors they'll need that phd but the jobs in industry that actually require a phd and compensate you enough to make up for the extra time and effort for it are pretty few and far between.

Option 1, tell your kids that the car is impractical for you and that if they want a yellow Camaro they can get jobs and buy one 😛

Option 2, stop caring about what others think of you.

I love my trans am, coworkers love it, I've taken it to job interviews and jumped out in a suit. I dd it 100k and no major problems. Go test drive one and take that engine to redline at full throttle. 🙂

Does your family go and eat paste together? I mean WTF is wrong with the world when you even entertain an idea from a 4 and 6 year old?!?!? You are the parent.. you guide them.. you are the boss.

Yes, we go out for paste once a week. If you read my original post, my wife actually suggested a Camaro similar to Bumblebee from Transformers, they kids just thought it was a great idea. The issue really comes down to if I (or my wife) would feel comfortable driving a yellow mullet-mobile.

Manual trans requirment:

Subaru Legacy GT
G8 GXP (6spd manual available) Must buy used
5-Series BMW = Must buy used

I'd go for a used G8 GXP. Faster then a BMW 550 and Benz E550.

LOL! ok, I'm sorry for my off-the-cuff paste rage. I think you've answered you own question with the mullet-mobile ref. 😀

Certain cars make good daily drivers, and others garage queens. I think if one daily drives a sports car you need to be careful stepping into mullet land. A month ago I started daily driving a Mx-5.. and I'm questioning my motivations now. I feel the car would be better served being garaged during the week, but it is really enjoyable and great for my small commute everyday. I think I'll enjoy it for the summer as is and make my mind up come fall.
