I can't go to that site because I can't copy paste for some reason (maybe that kid can haxor my WinXP to work properly?). But it seems like he's wasting his childhood. Why would you be in a rush to join the rat race??

The guy lives in Jaipur, which IIR is in India.

1. I'm stereotyping badly here, but if you lived in a country where you saw people starving to death in the streets, you'd be darn motivated too.

2. India is one of the up and coming "Computer" countries. American businesses are having LOTS of their code written there (because of cheap tech labor). Some major corporations have moved their customer service telephone departments there. It sounds like this kid's future is pretty secure.

3. Just for kicks, I've emailed a link to this thread to him. I used my Hotmail account though, so I don't know if his spamkillers will intercept the message.

4. Appreciated by:

· The hon. President of India and eminent scientist, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

· The Former President of India, Dr. K.R. Narayanan

· The hon. Prime Minister of India, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee.

· The hon. Governor of Rajasthan, Mr. Anshuman Singh.

· The hon. Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr. Ashok Gehlot

· Former Indian Ambassador to the USA, Mr. Naresh Chandra.

· Mr. Lou Gerstner, CEO, IBM.

· Mr. Shammi Kapoor ? one of the best artists of the Indian film industry.

· Mr. D.M. Sukathankar, Chairman, Sai Baba Sansthan.

:Q - It sounds like this guy is a national treasure!

Quicky off-topic anecdote:
An Indian friend of mine told me that many major corporations had moved their customer service centers to India because of the cheap skilled labor. He said that the workers were being taught to use Western accents and had access to live weather data in the U.S., so that they could claim they were in some specific U.S. State.

I called up American Express last month, and talked to some fellow who's "Texan" accent mysteriously reverted to an Indian one as we talked. He also said that "because of security" he couldn't tell me what state he was in. I couldn't tell if there was a time lag in our conversation, but I don't have much experience with international calls.

what wrong with a 14 year old getting certified?

Great... more power to you.

Its just I'm going to make sure my son doesn't follow this path :)

If your son really like this field, why would you keep him from accomplishing his dreams at an early age?

That's some impresive stats, but for a web designer, why does he have an average webpage on geocities? I would have thought hed use some PHP ASP or Flash on his own domain......kind of an oxymoron isn't it?

I'm not really qualified to give parenting advice, but nobody forced me to do that, I did it because I loved computers. If your son wants to do it do you plan on stopping him?
Yep
It's your son, so I'm just asking out of curriocity, why?

Because I know too many child prodigies, brilliant grad students, and talented engineers and programmers that grew up regretting the little things they didn't do as teenagers

instead, your kid will grow up resenting you for stifling his ambitions....

people who have regrets will always have had regrets, if you force them out of one regret, they will simply find something else to be dissatisfied with.

besides... there are plenty of people that regret not being more studious as a child, what will you do about that? it's my opinion that a parent's job is not to shut doors for a child, but rather to help the child find the door they want to go through.

the above is just my opinion, i am not a parenting expert, nor do i claim to be one. i just think you really ought to put a little more thought into this before you do it.

Actually Indian custom of arranged marriages will find him a wife. And his parents won't have trouble finding a girl for their son who has a plethora of technical accomplishments.

Well I'm happy you have your own opinion and am surprised to see you are eager to predict that my kid will resent me...

But I don't share your opinion simply because I'm old enough to have the experience to tell me that a well-rounded childhood is better than allowing my kid to make it his goal in life to attend a top-rated computer science program at an early age.

Thinking more about how crappy that website is, I came up with these analogies.....

It's like saying that kid is a certified ASE technician, but he drives to work in a rusted Yugo, with the bumper half falling off, and he can't get it to start half the time,

or

Never trust a skinny Chef

sorry, that wasn't meant to be a prediction... i was just trying to show you that despite how much you try to shelter your child from mistakes and regrets, they can and will still happen.

But I don't share your opinion simply because I'm old enough to have the experience to tell me that a well-rounded childhood is better than allowing my kid to make it his goal in life to attend a top-rated computer science program at an early age.

and i suppose his parents were too young eh?

it is one thing not to push your child into these things, it is another to actively prevent your child from pursuing their true interests.

what do you think about people who enter college early, like at age 14-15?

I'm not going to comment on his parents and their parenting decisions. First of all, its really not my business - just like its none of your business to question my parenting decisions :) Secondly, he lives in a different culture where technical achievement is valued very very highly.

I entered college early. And I know some other people that did. I attended a college and graduate program that has some of the brightest young minds in the world. The percentage of having a successful life after college is significantly lower for the child prodigies and workaholics. BTW, my definition of success does not mean having a high-paying job...
