Kicking BP while its down

I think the fact that being so deep underwater significantly exacerbated this problem isn't insignificant.
There is enough oil in very deep water sites that make it cost effective to drill that deep. If liberals allowed them to drill closer to land, they'd drill there and in the deep water sites. If anything, the Republicans "hands off" approach to regulation and safety mechanisms is more to blame than the bans on coastline drilling. Plus, keep in mind that the main cause as to why California (and the liberals) are so against drilling close to land is the 1969 spill in Santa Barbara. That spill which is a small fraction of this spill, messed up the area for years. http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/~jeff/sb_69oilspill/69oilspill_articles2.html

It's easy to underestimate just how much money this company has. They'll get out of this just fine.

Quite. They have already announced that they have access to about $20 billion in cash.

They also have other assets worth nearly $100 billion, and annual profits of about $20 billion.

It's unlikely that they would go bankrupt under any plausible scenario of claims for damages, even considering the vast size of the spill. The risk is that the govt tries some crazy cash grab, e.g. punitive damages which are way larger than the compensatory damages.

The govt needs to be careful here - because if they do destroy the BP, they risk destroying the entire US oil industry. If any one mistake means 'betting the company', you can pretty much bet that every company currently drilling in US territory will stop and go elsewhere, unless they're already committed to production.

BP won't go anywhere. They are repsonsible for paying a decent portion of British pensions. They are too big too fail.
Not just British pensions. 50% of BP stock is owned by US pension funds.

Still placing blind trust in corporations are we? God, we learn nothing in this country...

Blind trust?, hell no, the regulators who rubber-stamped BP's joke of a disaster response plan should be held accountable as well. My point was to force oil Co's to demonstrate a viable plan before issuing any permits to drill..

BP Bought Politicians

everyone wants to blame the other side. please provide a direct link to bills presented by democrats on tough legislation that the republicans shot down. also, show republican leaders who openly called for drilling close to their shores.

BP can go to hell. Whatever happens to them after this shit disaster is over, won't be enough, even if they're bankrupt.

They are irresponsible & careless with disregard for wildlife & our natural resources.

Even though I agree that it's possible that Oilbama may only slap them on the wrist, they deserve to go down, but not before paying every cent to repair the damage their carelessness caused.

Many of us have already decided how we feel about Oilbama as the President, but this disaster will leave a permanent mark on his term.

oilbama was born in kenya when it was under british rule, the oil spill is clearly his doing.

Yeah, but this is probably the lowest it will ever be without another major incident, and they will guaranteed bounce back. If you have the money to invest and can wait it out a while, it has some very good potential profits with little risk.

What are the future liabilities and how willl the serviding of these liabilities effect free cash flow?

Peopel that are buying BP dare speculators. They have no idea why they are buying.

For what it is worth, I bouhgt LEE today. It is undervalued and newspapers are not going to die like some think.

You really want to stick it to BP? Get an electric car, sign up for a green energy provider, and make sure that you're not buying their primary product.

Until someone makes all of those steps towards energy independence, they really don't have a right to whine about how evil big oil is. If you're filling your big cars or trucks with gas every week, you're part of the problem and not part of the solution.

What a moronic statement, your hate for Obama is so complete it's revealing your stupidity. Yea, BP just started drilling in the gulf because the current administration OK'ed it the day after Obama took office. If anything look to the Bush administration who had a "hands off" approach to everything..

First off, I don't hate Obama, I just think he's doing a piss poor job of handling the situation & is clueless on what to do or who to turn to in order to make things happen. If anyone is stupid, it's you for talking out of your ass without reading the news or knowing the facts.

If you had a clue, you'd know that Obama's had well over a month to get this disaster at least under some sort of control, but he hasn't. We're still in the same boat, as far as the oil leak is concerned, as we were on day 1. So either get your facts straight or STFU & sit down.

Get off Obama's nuts & pick up a newspaper. You missed a spot on your chin.

So what, oh wise one, could Obama or ANY other politician have done to "get it under control"??. Is there a Government resource he's held back that has caused this to worsen??..Should he send in aircraft carriers with boom nets attached to help skim??. Fact is BP was issued the drilling permit and that permit and it's disaster response plan was OK'ed DURING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION, all Obama can/could do is hold BP's feet to the fire which is exactly what he has done so far, so wipe the Shara Palin stank of your chops, it stinks almost as bad as your obvious racism does..

I'm not a racist, you moron. I just said he's doing a terrible job getting this situation under control & he is. Period. I wouldn't touch Sarah Palin with a ten foot pole...lol...but you can have that trash.

Funny thing is, since you're still sitting on what you think of as a high horse, I actually voted for Obama. The problem I have is, he can't figure out his priorities & doesn't know left from right.

So instead of you thinking he's our savior, maybe you should spend more time thinking about how much long-term damage this leak is causing & how it's already affecting a lot more than just the Gulf. If your mouth weren't open so wide & your eyes weren't half shut, you'd see that this disaster is causing everyone (you included) a lot more harm than good.

Considering how you've decided to have tunnel vision, you probably won't realize that until you're paying $6 a gallon for gas, then it might, just might, trigger something in that brain of yours.

Either that or paying $40 / lb. for the fish of your choice. Hell, at this point, both of those things might happen.

While you're at it, down on your knees for Obama, that is, why don't you tell us why he spent 2 days over here in Fremont, CA just a few days after the oil line broke, chit chatting with a small private solar company about solar systems? Since you're under the impression his priorities are properly aligned & he has all of his ducks in a row, why don't you tell us how a meeting with a small solar company is a higher priority than hundreds of millions of gallons of crude pouring into the Gulf?

I can't wait to see you tell us that solar panel systems are a higher priority than some low-level crude disaster.

I noticed how you completely ignored his question of what obama or any politician can POSSIBLY due to get this under control. Does the government have some extra organization with the qualifications to plug a hole at the bottom of the ocean caused by a greedy corporation that cut corners?

He is the President of the United States. It is his duty & responsibility to take a disaster, such as this leak, & do whatever it takes to fix it, quickly. He needs to tap into whatever amount of resources are available, or make available, to correct the problem. It's not happening. This should've been fixed or at least made major progress towards fixing it weeks ago. It's called taking the bull by the horns & making it happen. The technology is available, but he isn't bringing the right people together to make it work.

Instead, like everyone else involved in the situation, he's standing around waiting for someone else to fix it. Well, guess what, nobody else is fixing it. So, here we are, as millions of gallons of crude pour into the Gulf, standing around totally clueless & looking helpless.

Don't try to convince me that the technology doesn't exist, because it does. But it's going to require someone who actually gives a shit to bring it all together & make it work. In the meantime, we'll just watch our government stand around, or go visit small solar companies in the Bay Area, while we inflict more destruction on our planet.

Hell, even I drew up something freehand 2 weeks ago that, in theory would work, or at least contain the oil spill, & it looked great on paper & I'm not even an engineer. So, if I can use my brain to draw up something by hand, don't tell me the engineers who make $600k can't make something work. This is 2010 FFS.

Do I think Obama is intentionally refusing to tap into a trusted resource that can fix this mess? No, I don't think he's tapping into the right resources. They're the blind leading the blind right now & they're all clueless. See, that's what happens when you elect a leader who can't lead. Yes, I know, I voted for him too.

So go ahead, go on & on about how he's so helpless & this oil leaks a mile down aren't his forte & he doesn't have experience with this sort of thing. Go ahead, that's what most people do anyway, is live & breathe on excuses. They did it for 8 years with Bush, why not do it with Obama? Hell, half the country forgave Bush for taking forever & a day to lift a finger for the victims of Katrina, this probably won't be much different.

But I don't live by excuses & bullshit like these people. If there's a problem, I fix it, or tap into enough resources to help me fix it. Or keep working on it until it's fixed. I don't care if you think Obama is your savior. He may be a lot of things, but he's far from a leader.

So what is this technology you speak of? Mind using more than generalizations? You drew up something freehand? Give me a break, I can draw up something freehand too!

You're whining doesn't help anything either. Why don't you post your freehand drawing so we can all poke holes in it......

fucking moron just wants to rant like usual

F*** you...I hardly rant in this place, but this is something I couldn't just let go...& stand on the sideline & say everything is fine like everyone else...Just like they did for the past 8 years. My drawing is my drawing & you're right, nobody will give a rats ass about it...But that's ok...these silly arguments won't go anywhere...keep convincing yourselves that your fearless leader will fix everything & make it sweet as roses...you're entitled to that...Some of us though, call a spade a spade...

I've said what I needed to say...Rant over...you guys can watch the wildlife swim in the crude together, I've seen enough...
