Sadly, this is true. What should happen is that some of their execs and mgmt should go to jail over this, and they should both be heavily fined and should lose their right to do business with the US (and with US corporations).

From their actions so far, my guess is that they're going to try to fight against every cent they will be required to pay out in fines, court fees, etc.
Great idea, let's put every company that screws up out of business.

Maybe we should shut down the government too for all its screw ups.

BTW how many people have died because of this spills vs the number of people who have died do to poorly designed cars or cribs or even eating hot dog and chocking on them?

This was more than just a simple accident, this was gross negligence. They knowingly ran cut safety corners to get the well pumping ASAP. Companies have to pay for their actions. Defective products get recalled so why shouldn't BP pay for the entire clean up operation?

I have no problem with making BP pay for their screw ups.

But the idea that we should put them out of business is terrible.

How many people were killed due to problems with Toyota cars? Or the tires on Ford pickups? Or a dozen of other consumer safety problems. You realize that nearly every major company in the country has been responsible for accidents that have resulted in the deaths of innocent people. If we practiced a scored earth policy on them there would be no one left.

Shit happens. We learn from out mistakes, you punish people for their negligence and then you move on with life.

Don't think they should be put in prison but they should be required to pay the costs of cleanup and damages. If no pay then we cease any business with them and claim all assets on our lands until they pay off the debt.

BP execs should be put into Buttsecks Prison.

I don't really care if they go out of business or not. It's a gut reaction to overreact but they must truly pay up. The public will only be satisfied for them to pay every penny of clean up and to reimburse every lost penny that fishermen, hotels, restaurants, local governments, etc. would have made. Also, to suspend every single drilling license they have right now until independent auditors can determine they are operating safely.

Also, enough of this smoke screen shit. I actually don't want the federal government to take over of the well capping, but they keep on trying to slow the truth from getting out.

British Polluters

Why not go back a bit further in their naming history and blame Iran?
Before they had the word British in their name, they had Persian and Iran. Hell, that would be even better because you could use it as an excuse for war.

People employed by BP in the UK: 10,105
People employed by BP in the US: 22,800

It's hard NOT to kick this BP at this point, clearly they were completely unprepared for a blowout @5K feet depth. When the BOP failed they were basically winging it all the way, how many times have we all heard from one of the BP exec's or engineers "this has never been tried before at these depths", they had no business drilling at 5K feet unless a viable emergency plan was in place..

Agreed. People are being way too hard on BP. See my thread in P&N about that.

Yeah, except the damn liberals pushed them to those depths. They were doing fine inland.

BP = Bullshit Procedures?

I want to see the CEO of BP out on the beach picking up sludge and cleaning off animals. That is about the only thing they could do now that might make me think BP cared. And then only if he did it daily for weeks and not just some PR move.

Bought Publicity?

I got no problem with drilling as long as a believable plan is in place beforehand to deal with accidents, apparently BP's attitude was "that is an unlikely scenario so we will spend zero dollars on it"..

Still placing blind trust in corporations are we? God, we learn nothing in this country...

BP won't go anywhere. They are repsonsible for paying a decent portion of British pensions. They are too big too fail.

BP is a worldwide corporation and is based out of UK. They are not going bankrupt. Their stock will dip a bit because of the commotion being stirred by the yanks in the western hemisphere but everybody will forget over time.
