I'm trying to cipher through the marketing and hype of them. I looked at a few of the exercises and they look EXACTLY like similar dumbbell exercises.

I'm trying to add something to my normal cardio routine (an hr on the elliptical machine).

are they worth it?

I've always had to substitute dumbbells. I plan on getting a kettlebell or 2 when I put together my home gym this year, but right now with a normal gym membership I don't get to use kb's.

edit: guess I should answer your question. 🙂 There are several really good exercises you can do with kb's. They mostly fall into the muscular endurance/Crossfit category. So you're doing Crossfit or something like it, kb's are awesome. If you're just occasionally doing circuit training or the like, you may be better served to just substitute dumbbells.

Kettle bells certainly aren't just funny looking dumbbells...the shape makes things entirely different. And grab a pair of 1.5 poods (or 2 poods...) for some clean & jerks and it certainly won't just be a metcon. KBs can definitely be used for strength-oriented workouts as well.

<3 KBs...considering getting RKC certified next year.
