I watched the speech but must have missed the part about no right to strike. But, didn't the air traffic controllers also had no right to strike...but they did it anyway.

McDonalds workers do have the right to organize...will they? No

The air traffic controllers were fired because they shut down the airports and Reagan told them to return to work or be fired.

TSA workers cant make $24 an hour becuase they would not have such a high turn over.

And those who said that airport security is not "first line defenders", they are the only line of defenders for the sky.

They should have the right to organize and eventually they will organize.

Do you really want a disgruntal underpaid, over worked TSA employees protecting the airports?

I agree, how is this even a debate? Had the TSA employees been better trained and more comfortable with their working conditions/pay, is there any doubt they'd have at least picked up on the terrorist scent that fateful morning of 9/11? I don't think there's any question.

And since it seems people are missing the point here; the union bill is merely a precursor to a bill requiring stricter requirements for TSA workers. That in combination with better employee rights seems like a reasonable recipe for improved competence at airports. Well worth it to be sure.

Thank you and I agree with this statement. Those of you that railed against the quality of workers in the TSA have actually argued for the need of unionization/employee rights. Unless you are in favor of burger flippers securing our airports?

Here's a question. If all this added security was in place at our airports on September 10th, 2001, would 9/11 have been prevented?

NO. It just would have taken them an extra hour to clear security. Then again, maybe the added delay might have caused some of them to miss their planes. 😉

i was thinking of applying to be a TSA screener some time back. i decided the pain and aggravation of driving(would have been 2 hours each way to take the train) into Boston wasn't worth 22k a year.
