Good speech, but it's embarrassing it's even an issue, much less one that passes so closely. The right wing ideologues are so harmful to this nation. This should be a clear policy without debate. Too bad the monied insterests are doing so well at rolling back the clock before FDR to worker poverty and concentration of wealth.

Kennedy is doing great.

I was following this issue a bit, and couldn't believe the arguments against this amendment. You're talking about the workers who, theoretically, are supposed to be protecting the security of our transportation systems, and while people complain about how untrained or unqualified they are, they don't want to make the job more attractive for better workers. Give them worker protections, pay them a decent wage, and you'll have good people that will stick around. Treat them like crap, and you're going to have a mix of good people doing a half-assed job because they don't care and unqualified people who just want a job.

airport screeners as first line defenders?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

Sorry, so Kennedy goes off on a tirade not related to the issue at hand and we are supposed to congratulate him?

Is he seriously trying to compare TSA workers to ICE, border patrol workers, prison guards... Secret Service agents??? And later to the fire fighters who ran into the WTC?

Wow.

No offense, but TSA workers are glorified rent-a-cops. And it's probably a stretch to even use the term "glorified." The only thing that changed after 9/11 for airport security was they got a raise and became federal employees.

I see the usual suspects crowing on about the right to unionize, power to the people, etc... Kennedy is an idiot. "Look at turnover rates at Secret Service vs TSA" Secret Service agents are college educated professionals. TSA jobs are entry level security guard positions. ANYBODY who passes a background check can get the job. What a stupid comparison.

You missed the point. He's saying that those workers, including fire fighters, didn't complain when asked to step during 9/11, so the argument that TSA workers shouldn't have their same worker rights because it would just allow them to file greivences and not work during times of emergency just doesn't wash.

He's right.

The clip itself could use a little better context. I'd suggest reading the amendment itself and related discussions prior to his speech (including the Republican argument he's attacking). In that context, he's making a very good argument.

As a frequent business traveler, I agree completely with this assessment.

I think my fav TSA people are the ones at the Newark NJ airport, they are by far the rudest and 1/3 has huge bling-bling earrings and tattoos on their neck.

I worked on the TSA project and while they actually tossed out people who were blind or intoxicated(yes on chick showed up drunk and high out of her mind to the interview process). Most of these people were simply workers who worked the same job for a private company on Sept 10th 2001. All the govt did was come in, give them a better looking uniform and pay them twice what they are worth.

How many rent a cop mall security guards make north of 30K a year?

They shouldn't have the same workers' rights because they aren't the same kind of workers. If you hadn't cherry picked what I wrote you'd see that the I said TSA workers are entry level employees. You can quit your burger flipping job at McDonald's and go be a TSA worker. That's what kind of job it is. Should McDonald's employees have the right to organize as well?

TSA is not a front line defender organization. It's an entry level job. Jobs like that will always have turnover. There is no point in tying to stop it. There is certainly no point in allowing them to organize and be even more expensive to the tax payer than they already are.

Yeah, not that it would do them any good.

You're pretty selfish. They aren't going to get paid like the other positions, with organizing rights, because of the difference. That's no reason to treat them like crap.

With the exception of a few quality people who post in both, I just ignore the ATOT'er crowd, most of them are useless unless the thread is about cute kitty pictures or how to make friends on the internets.

We should be thankful that most of them stay out of P&N otherwise we would have constant whining about closing threads and demands for account bannage from the OT Cosa Nostra.

So, lets say you give TSA collective bargaining rights. If they go on strike, the nation shuts down. Isn't this exactly what happened when the air traffic controllers when they had collective bargaining rights? Should such a small group people hold to power to cripple our country and it's economy if they don't happen to get a raise or benefit package to their liking?

Kennedy is the consummate politician...full of rhetoric. But I do agree that unionization shouldn't affect the TSA's ability to respond rapidly to terrorist threats. However, that's all fine and good as long as they aren't on strike the day something nasty hits the fan.

Doc Savage, did you watch the speech, where Kennedy said the amendment does NOT give them the right to strike?

I'm not selfish. I'm not treating anybody like crap either. Do you know what TSA agents make? I don't know if it's the same all over the country but the paper here has ads for TSA positions at $24/hr to start. Not bad for unskilled labor with no higher education. They don't need to organize. There's no reason for it. And for Kennedy to compare them to Secret Service and fire fighters is just stupid.

you say something like that and then accuse me of being hard to understand?
