Keeping a dog out of the garbage?

dfuze

Lifer
Anyone have tips for keeping the dog out of the kitchen garbage?

We have a yellow lab about 5 years old who really likes going into the kitchen garbage. We've even tried moving the can into a lower base cabinet, but he has managed to open the cabinet door with his paw to get at his "prize".

what kind of discipline do you use when he does get in the garbage?

Those dogs are tough to keep from exploring and "getting into" things at that age, that's for sure!

Spray Bitter Apple on the garbage can? We have a chocolate lab who loves to eat but has never attacked the garbage.

Shock collar.

We have a german shorthair pointer which liked to chase the cats around the house and constantly harrass them. The gf accidently hit the panic button on the shock collar while the dog was chasing one (the two buttons were right next to each other) and gave the dog a super sized zap, the dog started hollaring, but to this day does not chase that cat, the dog chases the other one though. 🙂

Usually try to shame him by telling him no, bad, flick on the nose, ... kind of punishment

I see a few like the shock collar idea, might be worth giving it a try. Ours also likes to chase the cat too, so she mostly just goes downstairs at night when he goes to sleep on the daughter's bed or goes into his crate for the night. Would be nice to see the cat downstairs during the day too. :hmm:

When does this happen? When you are away from home or all the time? If the former, why not crate, kennel, or in some way restrict the dog while you are gone?

It happens mostly when we are out of the house so we do crate him now in those instances or put the folding step stool in the way, but sometimes you forgot. Less often, he will try while we are even just in the next room.

When one of my dogs would constantly countersurf, I would line one of these along the counter when I wasn't home and it stopped the behavior.

Obviously, I did not have it connected like the image but lined it along the length of the counter. I guess placing another object in front of it, would also do the trick.

We try to keep all food away from the edge of the counters too, he used to eat sticks of butter like crazy. Kind of surprised he hasn't died of heart disease from all the butter 😛

My last dog ate a stick of butter once. He was shitting and puking for about 2 days afterward.

I, uh, ...I mean, my boy missed out on his Valentine chocolate from my Mom because the spaniel ate it all. He must be the only dog immune to dying from eating it. She said he is still shitting some silver wrapper.

educate him.
Anyway it's weird, usually trashcans open with the door or are sliding and they're too hard to open with a paw.
