Keeping a dog out of the garbage?

Yeah, we thought he wouldn't be able to get at the can inside the cabinet either but it looks like since it is the end cabinet he can sort of pry it open by the edge of it. I would move it to another cabinet but this one is the perfect width (about 18" wide) and the others are 36" wide so that would waste a ton of space.

I got a trashcan with a heavier lid (has a latch lock too but don't usually use it) but my dog only weighs about 12lbs so that was enough to deter her.

I, uh, ...I mean, my boy missed out on his Valentine chocolate from my Mom because the spaniel ate it all. He must be the only dog immune to dying from eating it. She said he is still shitting some silver wrapper.

Milk chocolate has such low theobromine levels (the toxic substance in cocoa) that they need to at about 5% of their body weight to be in danger. But usually the darker the chocolate, higher the theobromine levels so even a few ounces of unsweetened baker's chocolate can be fatal.

Theobromine is also toxic to humans, but we are much faster at clearing it out of our system that we would have to eat pounds of pure cocoa in one sitting for it to matter.

Put a Latch on the cabinet the can is stored in now. Last I checked, Dogs do not have opposible thumbs.

Oh - You'll also want to put a clear plastic film on the cabints: Dog Nails *will* scratch up the wood.

Haha. I love Labs. I remember my mom got a contraption to keep the dogs off of the "nice" couches. It was a mousetrap with a large flat piece of plastic attached to the bar. When the trap was sprung, the plastic fan would swing the trap in the air, supposedly scaring the dog off of the couch. Might be something to put on the lid of a garbage can to catch them when you are not there. Still, I would expect a lab not to be phased by such a thing. Labs are kind of stupid happy. They're so sturdy and hardy that they can run into walls and not feel a thing. Makes act like the Lennies of the dog world.

Yeah my dog ate our entire bowl of leftover Halloween candy on November 1st. Mostly Snickers, Milky Ways, and Reese's cups. She was fine apart from some short-term doggie diarrhea.

The only way I've been able to keep her from getting into our bathroom garbage is to empty it into our kitchen garbage before we leave her alone. She can't open the cabinet doors though... oh man, it would be awful if she could!

Anyone have tips for keeping the dog out of the kitchen garbage?

We have a yellow lab about 5 years old who really likes going into the kitchen garbage. We've even tried moving the can into a lower base cabinet, but he has managed to open the cabinet door with his paw to get at his "prize".

empty the garbage everyday? thats what I do

wife went the aversion route with our first rottweiler. He was scolded a few times, and then he got to wear it as a collar accessory😀
He stayed out of garbage cans from that point forward, everywhere.

My dog ate an entire package of chocolate chocolate chunk cookies, he had diarrhea for a couple days, but for hours after eating it he was running around my yard non-stop.

It was almost as funny as when he got his head stuck in a Doritos bag that he got out of the trash. He was walking into walls and wagging his tail, dogs are hilarious.

I put mine in a closet. My parents use a really heavy all wood garbage container thingy that is too heavy for their dog to open.

All you need is a strong spring and a couple of eye hooks. Put one on the door, the other inside the cabinet. Attach spring to both. It will be very hard for your dog to get the door open far enough to get inside. Downside, is you need to unhook spring when you want to get in. A bungee cord would also do it. Last resort, put a lock on the door.

Hahaha.

*BONK* This mystery cave is full of DORITOS!!! *BAM*

While funny in looks, this stunt should be avoided. Lots of pets die due to repeating this trick when no one is around to help them get the bag off their heads.

I haven't used regular garbage bags in years. I just reuse the grocery store bags. The garbage is taken out every night. (Actually, when my wife isn't looking, I open the kitchen window and toss it into the can from there.)

Our best friends have one of the big mastiff breeds. They have a metal can. There is a bolt in the lid and one below it on the main part. There is a heavy duty hair bungee that stretches between them that keeps 150 lbs out of the trash.

I bought new trash cans with the lids that open when you step on the pedal. They obviously won't get to them if they can't smell anything.
