Hi:

I am assembling a computer and have pretty much everthing configured but as to what case + power supply + cooling to use:

Here is my computers configuration:

Processor :: XP 2100+ :: $82 @ Newegg
Motherboard :: Asus A7N8X Deluxe :: $139 @ Newegg
Memory :: Kingston Hyper-X PC3000 512MB x 2 :: $170 ($85 * 2) @ ExcaliberPC
CDRW :: Lite On 52x24x52 CDRW Model LTR-52246S Retail :: $47 @ Newegg
DVD :: LITE-ON XJ-HD166S 16X DVD ROM Drive :: $33 @ Newegg
HDD :: Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive 8MB Model :: $99 @ Newegg
FDD :: SONY 1.44MB 3.5 INCH INTERNAL FDD DRIVE :: $8 @ Newegg
Video :: ATI RADEON 9500PRO 128MB DDR :: $165 @ OC Systems

I am going to overclock my 2100+ and need to configure a case and the cooling appropriately. I do not care much about the way my case looks as long as it is presentable. My budget though is something i care about and prefer that all this does not cross over 70 dollars .. however i will be able to spend an additional 30 dollars if it makes a vast difference. My components (FDD, DVD and CD-RW) are presently white but if need be I can get them in black as required. I have never overclocked a pc before and never assembled one either even though I have tinkered around enough and upgraded almost every part in my computer myself. Please advise me as to what combination of a case + power supply + cooling (heatsink, fans, etc) I should use.

Thanks and will appreciate the help ..

The Antec SLK3700 has a 120mm rear exhaust fan that would help keep the air moving past your CPU quickly, and you can add another 120mm fan in the front if you want. The power supply is an Antec SL350, which should get the job done. However, the case has a door over the drives, so you may want to check out the photos here to see if you like it. It's about $74 plus shipping from newegg, but that includes the 120mm fan and a decent power supply.

Is the 2100 retail? If you are planning on overclocking I would suggest a quality HSF. Thermalright gets the job done.

The link is working for me :confused: You can see the case at www.antec-inc.com or go to Newegg.com and search for it if the link still isn't working there.

The link works fine for me as well.

A retail processor will give you a 3 year warranty versus 30 days for OEM and also a heatsink/fan. The heatsink/fan is fine for a stock clocked system and even mild overclocking, but you are still better off buying a new heatsink. It is pretty rare that a processor will die on its own after 30 days. Since you are planning on overclocking I would suggest a Thermalright SK7 or SLK800 with a fan based on how quiet you want your computer. SVC is a good place for cooling products. The Antec SLK 3700 is a good case.

Go for an SK7 or SLK800 for a heatsink if you intend to overclock. A YS-Tech 80mm Variable speed fan seems to be one of the most popular fan choices for these heatsinks. I picked mine up from SVC as suggested by BG4533.

The case mechBgon linked you to is a very nice case as well. If you don't like that you could always go with the Chieftec/Antec/Chenming case that just about everyone has.

Thanks guys:

The combination of the Antec SLK 3700 ($73)+ SLK800 ($38)+ YS Tech 80 mm adjustable fan ($8) is around $40 over my budget but I should be able to squeeze some money in to make up for that. All of the above are prices at newegg so I should be able to shop for better elsewhere. But this my question:

1. Is it really worth spending all that money for cooling. I mean its either me spend $20 something $$$ extra for a XP 2400+ or spending $40 something extra for the overclocked XP 2100+. Will I be able to overclock the 2100+ faster than the XP 2400+.

2. Also, Antec SLK 3700 looks good to me. However, should I go with black or white equipment (DVD, CDRW, FDD).

Thanks and regards

You might consider getting a refurbished A7N8X deluxe from Newegg for about $50 less. You might have to check every day for about a week, but they usually get them in for $89.
