These fucking two little po'dunk states have double the senators of NY state, and they can fit their entire populations into just the island of Manhattan, with room to spare. This country is so fucked up due to the completely unbalanced power of ignorant rural hicks lording over tens and tens of millions of more people actually living in the real world. Unreal

Strong piece with some terrific Comments at The New York Times ATM.

Paywall penetrating link expires in 14 days, being Nov. 1, 2024:

It would mean more if they didn't make third party statements to a guy writing a book years after the fact.

I get that they want the military to look neutral, but if that's the case, why say anything at all, even in "private?"

Sadly what is even more fucked up is that ever since I actually started paying attention to politics (early 90s).. Dems only win when things are really bad. They fix stuff and the country seems to always want to let Republicans get in and change things.

Clinton, Obama, Biden all got in when things were bad.. Bush and Trump got in when things were going good.

This whole stock market being good, inflation returning to normal is scary at times. I just hope things are still fucked up because of Roe and MAGA that dems get a chance this year!

There is one thing I'm certain of in this election. America will get the election, and the results and the ensuing shitshow, they deserve.

This is America. This has been America the entire time. That's what this country is. America has always been this fucked. All of the Republican Presidents have been every bit as much of evil clowns as Turmp, just that the entire apparatus of American culture put on this veneer of it somehow being more respectable. They all were as shitty as he is. The Democrat ones have been what Americans seem to think the Republican ones were, which is to say, actually hardline Capitalist, fiscally sound, Christian, strong militarily, follows norms, does what they genuinely believe is in best interest of America. And that will almost certainly continue (hell that's been true for California governors and those would generally be considered the most likely to be staunchly far left).

How can he have lost twice if he hadn't even lost once in their mind? Him losing or winning, doesn't matter, both outcomes confirm what they believe already.

You are as delusional about the sway that Turmp has and the corruption of the Republican party as his followers are about him. Turmpism will continue even after he's dead. The Christian fascist movement will continue after Turmp is gone.

Some of you are gonna be in for a rude 2nd/3rd/4th/+ awakening when you realize, this shit is only gonna get worse. The tech industry is shifting hard right. Some of them are openly talking about literal police states used to forcefully keep people in line. And by that, they mean anyone criticizing them. They're already doing stuff like giving police face detection databases where they catalogue every available picture about you (if I'm not mistaken there's already been cases where a cop took a pic of someone with their phone, then searched for them on one of those databases to find out info and then began harassing them, think it was women they were trying to get with). And the rich guy that was sending around vehicles with cameras doing face detection to try to get student protestors kicked out of school. Oh, and they're conveniently opted out of those databases (if they have enough clout at least). Microsoft and Amazon (not sure if Google has yet, or is supposed to), built Israel black boxed (meaning the companies doing them can't even access what Israel is doing on there) data centers that Israel is using as part of their genocide. They won't even need to tattoo the ID numbers like the Nazis did with modern tech.

I'm not sure that matters and that's frankly exactly what Turmp wants (since he wants it to be all about him alone as he doessn't want anyone to be able to usurp him so that Republicans couldn't do to him what Democrats did to Joe). Notice how, as usual, Republicans are doing all the shit they were howling about liberals for? Supporting a clearly unwell, way too old man?

I genuinely don't think there is such a thing as an undecided voter in that I don't think there is anyone that all this American political theatre is gonna change the mind of. The actual undecided are the ones that it literally will just come down to how they feel that day. Did their wife/girlfriend piss them off the night before? Fuck it, I'll vote for Turmp, gotta keep that bitch in line! Did I encounter a homeless person on the way to vote? Fuckin liberals. Stop and get gas before, and it was higher/lower than expected. Or maybe you went out to eat last night and remember how much you hated being a waiter/waitress? Studen loans, remember Democrats tried to get you some help, while Republicans say fuck you you don't deserve it after they got billions in handouts? It was already basically only diehard Turmp fans going to Turmp's shit. Most major wealth is permanently Republican, and even the tech industry is beginning to openly court right wing shit. The lines formed already except for those that will just not vote because the line is too long, or they decided to take a shit instead, or whatever other bullshit reason "undecided voters" give for claiming to be undecided (when they're often like Libertarians, claiming one thing but just being full of shit).

Also, Kari Lake has been in Arizona spreading Turmp's diarrhetoric the entire time. And others have too. Hell, not sure what thread it was in, but talking about Nikki Haley still stumping for Turmp and he's still openly shitting on her. Same with DeSantis. If McCain was still alive he'd be griping but he'd also still be voting for Turmp, just like he did when he was alive. So its not like he doesn't have anyone spreading his bullshit, even the ones who hate him still will vote for his ass.

This election, more than any I can remember is less about rhetoric, I think everyone has tuned that shit out already. It basically boils down to 3 things. People that know the reality (people voting to prevent abortion bans for instance), people that believe the same old bullshit (economy is better under Republican presidents), and then people that hate the entire thing and basically are just gonna coin flip who they vote for, or will vote in dumbest ways possible then bitch "See that's why I don't vote!"
Trump is far and away the most deranged and demented ex-president/candidate we have ever had. He is the only Rep I can recall that tried to violently overturn a legitimate election, and 3 plus years and 60 recounts later still wont accept the results. He has sown division, distrust of our institutions, and hatred within our country to a degree that no one has ever done before.

I've thought the same thing all my life. The dems get elected, get the economy back on track...things are going pretty well...so the public gets conned into electing a repub...who manages to fuck up the economy...so the public elects a dem to fix things...repeat ad nauseum.
For those who don't believe that the republicans fuck up the economy...just look at history.

For comparison's sake, the population of the State of Hawaii circa 2023 was ~1,435,000. I'm pretty sure that from gathering up the land mass of the populated islands of Hawaii, it could get tucked in rather nicely in any corner of both of those states.

Our divisions are ripped open and salted by social media. By 24/7 news and the entire political apparatus.
What you mean to say. Trump is far and away the most deranged and demented... so far.
Because people like Vance will line up to do far more damage in a more effective way.

We face the growth and evolution of a political war machine, and the devolution of the American people at large.
To single out Trump is to miss the forest from the trees. It gets so much worse.

That whole "violently overturn an election" is going to happen again and again until we put it down, or they succeed.
MAGA is already lying about Georgia voting machines.

They're prepositioning their Christian Soldier's (whether they're believers or not) state of mind to reflexively react with "See! I knew Trump was going to be robbed all over again!!" if Trump loses. It's one of their best ways (the only way?) to handle their incredulous bouts of denial thinking they couldn't lose that election what with Trump being the ONLY choice any patriotic red blooded American could make, so there absolutely had to have been some massive cheating conspiracy going on....again. Circular reasoning at it's finest.

When Elon said he was going to take over the ground game this is pretty much what I was hoping for.

I wonder if that is a paying gig..

Cause I would sell trump to people with the following things

He is going to
remove social security
Remove preexisting conditions for health care
Raise drugs prices to help out big pharma
Lower taxes. But say not for you becuase clearly looking at your house you are not in the tax bracket for it to take effect

And etc

Part of the problem they are having is that Mr. Big Bucks was paying $20/hr for this and not reimbursing gas (lot of driving required). Not exactly an economically attractive offer.

That is sort of like saying to single out Hitler is to miss seeing the forest for the trees, no? Yes, there has always been an undercurrent of hatred, racism and misogyny in our country, and social media also plays a big part in the division we are experiencing, but Trump was the one who brought it out into the open and made OK again to hate, name call and demean others.

Social media isn't the problem. the problem is that the 1st amendment has been expanded thru manipulation of it's interpretation, to protect hate filled, manipulative, and straight up lying, that it was never intended to protect.

I'm reading analysis of the Georgia early voting that is saying the highest turnout ratios are in rural Trump counties so far.

So far there is no correlation with partisan lean at district level. 2024 is going to be an entirely different election from 2020 mechanically as vote methods have been upended again. Beware almost all takes on this subject.

But what if the speech of your opposition party IS "hate filled, manipulative, and straight up lying", and they view it all as perfectly normal?
When half a democracy does not consent, there is no longer a democratic process of working together for a greater good. Nor of accepting election results.

This division is fueled and organized through social media. Where once there were localities, grass roots, and individual thoughts. These days it's an incredibly unified national message passed down to each and every person. The sheer volume of this hate filled noise is enough to erase the signal of who we once were as a people. The legacy our founders left us needed to be maintained and passed down to future generations. We dropped the ball. Bigly.

Our institutions were far stronger prior to the internet. They have been supplanted and now our base instincts run wild. In ways that we cannot recover from.
