News Kamala Harris called out by Jamaican father over marijuana joke

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/20/kamala-harris-father-pot-1176805

Kamala Harris made headlines last week when she joked in a radio interview that of course she smoked marijuana in her younger years: “Half my family’s from Jamaica, are you kidding me?”

But the crack didn’t go over well with at least one Jamaican: Donald J. Harris, the candidate’s father.

The elder Harris sent an unsolicited statement to Kingston-based Jamaica Global Online, where the emeritus professor of economics at Stanford wrote a recent essay on his family’s history.

“My dear departed grandmothers (whose extraordinary legacy I described in a recent essay on this website), as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics,” he wrote.

Added Donald Harris: “Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty.”

Kamala Harris’ campaign had no comment.

Maybe Kamala needs to put down the pipe and at least pretend to be serious candidate?

lol, all this hubbub about MJ. weirdos. I wouldn't withhold my vote for someone who admitted to drinking, which IMO is a worse offense. This is one of those topics that Con's prefer feels over facts.

Would you withold your vote from a candidate who lied about drinking in parking lots and listening to hair metal as a cheap and disingenuous way to appeal to male voters of the 80s? The MJ isn’t the offense.

Don't mind the misrepresentation by FDC, it's typical

In the interview with “The Breakfast Club,” Kamala Harris cited her Jamaican heritage when asked to respond to those who believe she’s opposed to legalizing marijuana. “Are you kidding me?” she asked.

Harris said she smoked a joint in college. “And I inhaled,” she added, a joking reference to former President Bill Clinton’s comment on the campaign trail in 1992 that he smoked marijuana but “didn’t inhale.”

Harris, a 2020 Democratic White House hopeful, made headlines last week during an interview with “The Breakfast Club,” after acknowledging that she has smoked marijuana in the past.
Harris also said accusations that she has tried to keep the drug from becoming legalized are not true.
“That’s not true,” she said. “Half my family’s from Jamaica, are you kidding me?” she added with a laugh.

When Sen. Kamala Harris said last week that she obviously supports marijuana legalization and has smoked the plant, she cited her ethnicity — “Half my family’s from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?”

Included the washingtontimes so you can see where FDC got his paraphrasing from.

and overall, lol at a Jamaican being offended by the stereotype. It's not unusual at all to associate Jamaican's and MJ.

Did she lie?
Depends on how you interpret her response to the question. What is true is that some media outlets, to include some that serve the African-American community, have rightfully questioned her record as a prosecutor...and quite a few people are now calling her out for using MJ and gangsta rap, harmful racial stereotypes, to establish her “blackness” credibility and distance herself from that record.

You specifically said she lied.

That's a nice diversion.

That’s a great deflection.
lol, you said she lied, I asked if you actually had any evidence, and you twisted it to "she's disingenuous" so you could still be "right." and I deflected? That's some serious deflection. You're usually better than that.

I have no idea whether or not she really listens to rap or not, she may very well be acting mildly disingenuous trying to garner support from certain segments of the voting block... So what? Still a relative non-issue.

Pretty soft critique. Not to the level of poupon or tan suit gate, but soft.

So, you pose a question based on your feels. Ok dude...

You responded to my original post. I don't see using MJ or Alcohol as an immediate disqualifier. Context matters.
I provided the context for why she is getting called out for MJ. You can choose to ignore it.

Um no, you provided a hypothetical scenario based on your feelings. You feel like she lied about partying at metal concerts in the 80's? And this lie was meant to gain votes with certain segments of the population? Well stop the presses, we got a real scandal here. Meanwhile, the GOP lies regularly about all sorts of topics that impact millions of American's lives, "shrug, looks at that dem tho, I don't FEEL like she was honestly at a metal concert in the 80's"....but can't prove that she lied either.

Meanwhile, the GOP elected leader of the free world verifiably lies on a regular basis.

Please excuse the excessive LULz.

Her time as a prosecutor will be heavily scrutinized, which is why the MJ topic will come up.

And sometimes people fixate and quibble endlessly on choice of words.

I can’t prove she lied, so let’s take that out of the discussion.

Do you think its acceptable for a candidate to use racial stereotypes as a way to appeal to voters? This is a bit more than pant suits.

Speaking of deflection....

I don't think "using racial stereotypes" is a monolithic action. Sometimes I think it's a non issue, sometimes I think it is a problem.

I'm not a black and white guy on most things, I think that's far too simplistic.

There are no binary rules, but as it relates to Harris, she is drawing legitimate criticism for how she chose to establish her bona fides.

Bernie Sanders struggled to appeal to black voters. If he started to go on radio interviews to build credibility through the recreational use of MJ, don’t you think it would draw criticism?

We are in violent agreement, you are fixating on the wrong thing.

Quote: “They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Who said this?
What are your thoughts and what did you say back then?

Regarding the rap thing, I didn’t listen much in the late 80s/90s but come on how can you not like this

We may be in agreement on some things, one thing we are not in agreement on is how high the bar needs to be for Democrats. Republicans have made it very clear how much they value moral fiber. You'll have to come up with something better than unsubstantiated accusations that someone is lying about what music they partied to 30 years ago in an attempt to gets votes from classic metal fans.

You'll also have to come up with something better than concern about stereotypes. Again, the bar is so low now, that a Jamaican referring to jamaican stereotypes wrt MJ is not even on the radar.

Admittedly, I had to look up the quote. It’s Trump. I don’t recall this exact quote, but I rejected Trump long ago for making similar comments, and have not pulled a lever for any Republican who stands by him.

I like some rap, typically the collaborations with metal bands or songs that sample iconic metal riffs. Turn it up, bring the noise!
