I just wanted to give everyone some information on kale chips since they are pretty healthy (at least compared to other salty/crunchy snacks) yet tasty.
ingredients:
1 bunch of kale (approximately 4-5 big stems)
1 tbsp olive oil (this is approximate since i didn't pre-measure)
1 tsp sea salt (this is approximate since i didn't pre-measure)
preparation:
wash kale. rip the leaves off the big stems and then tear them into smaller pieces. i used pieces about 2 to 3 inches across. dry kale. i used a salad spinner but you can just blot them with a paper towel. put kale in a bowl and drizzle olive oil over it. i covered the bowl with plastic wrap and shook the bowl around to mix up the olive oil. sprinkle salt over kale. i mixed this up similarly.
cooking:
preheat oven to 350. spread kale out on baking sheets (line baking sheets with tinfoil for quicker cleanup). it's ok if they're really close to each other. bake for 10 minutes or until edges get brown but not burnt.
result:
very tasty! the kale gets much, much smaller, much, much thinner and much, much crispier. people have likened them to potato chips but i found them much more like toasted seaweed paper in texture. they almost melt in your mouth from the thinness. their lack of mass means that the bulk of the flavoring comes from the seasoning which in my case means salt. unfortunately, i both burnt mine and used too much salt but i still found them tasty enough to eat almost all of the first batch and a lot of the second batch. i'm not sure how much of the health benefits are retained due to the extreme decrease in mass though i couldn't fathom where the healthy stuff would disappear to.
final thoughts:
next time i'll add onion and/or garlic powder and use much less salt since i can always sprinkle more salt on them afterwards if i want. i'll also take them out much sooner; possibly around 7 minutes to avoid burning since i can also just cook them longer if they are underdone. i left them out overnight to cool off and they were still crispy the next morning. they've been in a plastic sandwich bag since this morning and are still crispy.
good luck to you if you try making a batch for yourself and please let me know what recipes you try out if you do.
thanks!
