Day 11 of 366: Wednesday, 11-Jan-2012

Sleep: 11-2am (3 hours), 3-6am (3 hours) both w/ interruptions
Diet: Oatmeal & Omelet, Sweet Potato Smoothie, Chicken/Sweet Potato, Tuna/Cauliflower, Chicken/Sweet Potato, Dark chocolate-covered raspberries, Chicken/Sweet Potato Fries, Fruit Smoothie, Natural PB/Brown Rice Cake/Apple chunks
Exercise: Missed

I tried making the oatmeal in the my rice cooker with fruit. Unflavored oatmeal comes out great, but it comes out kinda terrible with fruit. The crock pot does an entirely different job. Funny because you'd think that they are basically the same - a bowl with a surround-heating element - but they cook completely differently from each other. Ah well, I know that it can be good (at least in the crock pot), I just have to dial in the recipe. Still a sugar addict, too - had some dark chocolate. I know it's not as bad as other things, but I'm still trying to wean myself off junk food, even if it's only dark chocolate-covered fruit. I've noticed that on my really tired days I definitely have a stronger craving for sugar, probably due to the short-term energy hit it gives me.

I also tried making the PB rice cakes with fresh apple chunks. It was okay, but dried apple tastes a LOT better for some reason. I think it's partially the chewiness of the dried apple. The only downside is that I have to slice up the dried apple rings so the pieces aren't too big when you bite into it (it's annoying to rip those into little pieces lol...knives have a hard time with them!). Also still experimenting with smoothies. Today I did banana, frozen blueberry, and half a can of pineapple and juice (100%, not the syrup kind), with vanilla soymilk and baby spinach. Came out pretty gross haha. I need to figure out the right all-natural flavor combination so that I can start making them ahead of time & freezing them.

Ouch....2-4hrs a night is pretty rough. Exercise does really help, but it makes sleep is that much more important for recovery.

Sugar is my biggest diet weakness, and easily my #1 enemy for dropping and keeping off the fat (which is sad, because before college I didn't have a sweet tooth :(). Everyone's different, but in order for me to back off the sugar, I have to do 2 things: (1) keep my total carb intake reasonably low & (2) exercise. If I do those 2 things, I can go months without having any sugar cravings at all, though I tend to eat 1-2 small-portion deserts a month b/c of some idea that it'll help me avoid a binge. The exercise is extremely important to me...even keeping my diet proportionally the same but accounting for fewer calories burned, I tend to start craving sugar without the exercise.

The other big tip for staying away from sugar, and this one applies to everyone: don't keep it around the house, and don't browse the sugary stuff whenever you go to the store. Out of sight, out of mind as they say...but you might have to get rid of the worst of the cravings before you can implement this part ;). This can be much harder when there's other people in the house with a sweet tooth. My wife wants me to help her get back in shape and lose weight after she has the baby, so maybe I can find a way to ween her off the sugary stuff too.

Yeah, for sure. I think my body is just craving the extra energy like crazy because of the lack of sleep. The next couple of weeks will be nice for getting enough sleep while my family is visiting my in-laws though, so I'll get myself back on track in the next couple of days

Day 15 & 16:

Slept a lot yesterday, not much of an appetite today. I think I'm recovering from a stomach bug or something. Going to sleep more and get back into it tomorrow.

Day 17:

Still sick to my stomach, bleh. Not feeling weak anymore. Going to give it another day. Cooking up a big bowl of brown rice to aid the healing process :awe: I think maybe I got food poisoning or something.

Buy or build a sous vide machine. Your ability to cook tasty meals conveniently will improve dramatically.

I have one and I'm considering building another. That way, I can do beef/seafood/pork in one and veggies in the other.

Day 18 & 19:

Yesterday not so hot, today had a few healthy meals. Can't tell if I'm recovering from a stomach bug or food poisoning or what.

What machine do you recommend?

Use with a slow cooker, rice cooker, a stockpot with a fifth burner, an ice cooler* with a immersion heater, etc.

I use both the pot and ice cooler option depending on how many people I need to feed.

*You can even use a galvanized trash can if you absolutely had to.

After you do that, read through this. After that, buy yourself a copy of Modernist Cuisine. Done.

Day 20:

Did oatmeal for breakfast and a beef patty/sweet potato/mixed veggies for lunch, with a veggie gluten-free/dairy-free pizza for dinner. Going shopping for food tomorrow. Next week will be a good week ;)

So instead of a dedicated machine, you recommend this external unit? (I have never tried it before) A lot of my cook friends swear by this style of cooking!

It's more versatile, though an all-in-one unit like the Sous Vide Supreme is simpler to use.

Day 24 & 25:

Yesterday up at 4am, 30 minutes on the elliptical. Today up @ 6 & straight to work. Probably working late again tonight.

Watched a really interesting documentary the other day called "Forks over Knives" about a plant-based diet & its effects on cancer & health in general. I've been interested in a Vegan diet as a performance-enhancing diet (more energy, etc.), so it was relevant. Discovered some interesting protein sources:

Peanut Butter: 64g protein per cup (1 Tablespoon = 4g protein)

Nutritional Yeast Flakes: 64g protein per cup (1 Tablespoon = 4g protein) Tastes like cheddar, I've had this before due to my dairy allergy

Flaxseed Seeds: 31g protein per cup (mix these into smoothies or homemade energy bars - great with blueberries/almonds/etc. in a food processor)

Steel-cut Oatmeal: 24g protein per cup

Lentils: 18g protein per cup (looks like some kind of soup bean, had them but have never cooked them myself)

Chickpeas: 15g protein per cup (aka garbanzo beans or hummus)

Black Beans: 15g protein per cup

Lima Beans: 15g protein per cup

Pinto Beans: 15g protein per cup

Peas: 9g protein per cup

Quinoa: 8g protein per cup (breakfast cereal if you haven't had it before, sort of like a foamier cream of wheat)

Red Potato: 7g protein each (large)

Millet: 6g protein per cup (cereal grain)

Brown Rice: 5g protein per cup

Sweet Potato: 4g protein each
