Guys, this system is completely configured. I have a 1.1Ghz myself, and this is for a friend and he's paying me to build it. I have the same setup coming in tomorrow or Wed.. I had a problem with the motherboard intially.

To get down to it: I wondered why the HDD was so slow, I looked under the IDE controller driver's properties and it is running in PIO mode, as is everything else! In the BIOS, there is an option for PIO and UDMA, but you can't turn PIO off! :( Anybody know how to get around this? I tried installing the "AMD" EIDE drivers off of the MSI CD but that gave a BSOD at startup. I had to do a last known good configuration and here I am now. If my setup is like this, I'll be returning it for an Intel setup. This system was a pain to install to begin with and I don't want my machine to be just as bad.

All devices that are under both the primary and secondary IDE channels are running on "Auto" and DMA if available.

I just rebooted and now it's different! :Q

Here's my channel setup:

Primary Master: IBM 45GB 75GXP
Primary Slave: None
Secondary Master: Plextor 12x10x32x ATAPI
Secondary Slave: Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM

Right now, the IBM is the only drive that isn't running in DMA.

Plextor is doing DMA.
Pioneer is doing "Ultra DMA"

This certainly is interesting - the IBM is obviously the most important to have run DMA. :(

Just took out everything except IBM 45GB. Threw it on the secondary master and under the secondary controller from device manager it still shows currently PIO mode. At the top for the Auto Detection, I can't change it to anything else - it's grayed out.

Damn!

My system is like this too!

My Maxtor HD (UDMA 33 drive) is set for DMA if available, yet its stuck in PIO only mode!

AGH!!

I get transfers of like 3 mbps!

Just a quick question.

Is the ata66(100) connected correctly ?

Blue=mobo
grey=slave
black=master

If the cables are correct, did you try the via ide driver?

I installed the 4in1's from the CD, after I had problems with the ATA-100 drivers from that Soltek site. It (some setup program) kept coming up each time I restarted the computer no matter what I did.

As for the colors, the blue connection on the motherboard has the ATA-100 cable, and IBM drive on it. The other drives (DVD, CD-RW) are both on the secondary controller.

Stefan,

That's in another leage ;) Problems with a BX board probably means a software problem. I believe my problem exists with either the IBM 75GXP, a bad motherboard (again! argh), or something with the 4in1 drivers.

This chipset sure is pissing me off. (Before you flame: I'm used to the BX chipset, throw it all in and it works like it's supposed to! :()

Geekish Thoughts:

Why not try the newest official(4.25), or the newest beta(4.26)?

Got a link? ;) Certainly worth a try.

Right now I'm in the process of running an IBM diagnostic utility through PC-DOS to determine if the hard drive is the problem.

do you think there are newer drivers that I can use for getting my drive in UDMA mode, than are included with the Windows 2000 Pro CD (or SP1)?

Did you go into the system properties and turn DMA mode on for the CDROM/DVD?

Check this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=29&threadid=295062

It worked for me... after installing and rebooting, it should install the controller for the first channel, then reboot and it should install for the second channel... Think that's what was coming up.

It worked fine for me. But for some reason, this morning when I attempted to start up my computer, I had problems with the SYSTEMced file? Check this thread for more: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=34&threadid=305937 I don't think anyone else has had the problem I had though...

When I first noticed the problem, all devices were in PIO mode. As of right now (just installed the drivers that LXi provided) the CD-RW and DVD are both running DMA, and Ultra DMA, but the HDD still is only in PIO mode.

It looks like this under the primary controller's advanced settings:

Device 0

Device Type: Auto Detection (greyed out and can't change)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode

Device 1

Device Type: Auto Detection (can change)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable

---------------------------------------------------------
Secondary Controller's Advanced Settings:

Device 0

Device Type: Auto Detection (greyed out, can't change)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: DMA Mode

Device 1
Device Type: Auto Detection (greyed out)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode

Bah! :( This HDD is so damn slow. Games, everything else, all runs fine. :(

Geekish Thoughts,

The way your Primary channel is set up is the same as mine! The secondary is different on mine cause I have a Pioneer 104s DVD on secondary master and Mitsumi 4/2/8 cdrw as secondary slave.

Device 0

Device Type: Auto Detection (greyed out and can't change)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode

Device 1

Device Type: Auto Detection (can change)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable

---------------------------------------------------------
Secondary Controller's Advanced Settings:

Device 0

Device Type: Auto Detection (greyed out, can't change)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode

Device 1
Device Type: Auto Detection (greyed out)
Transfer Mode: PIO Only (I set it myself)
Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode

LXi, yeah, but no one else seemed to have the problem... so mine's an isolated incident. I've seen you helping a lot of people in these forums before... do you have any idea how to fix my problem? Or if anyone would be so good as to hook me up with the ERD disk. I'm on broadband right now, (at my friends place) so... it should be under 1.44 mb's right? PLEASE...

Merry X-mas.
