Just what exactly does doom 3 require?

I just built a new PC (see sig) and still am unable to run Doom 3 effectively. The game runs fine until 2 or more monsters appear on the screen at the same time. Then the game slows to a crawl to the point where I can't even play it. I have the new catylst 5.4 drivers installed, since for some reason the drivers that came with my card didn't not allow me to even start a game on Doom 3. what more does this game want?

what resolution is your display? What did you turn on/off for your video card?

My res in doom 3 is 640X480. I didn't turn anything on or off on my radeon, I left everything at the default values.

odd.. 9800pro shouldnt have to run at that res at all, and then still be slow :x Check you havent got antialiasing etc on?

If not sounds like a config error - run 3dmark 2001 ( to gauge overall sys performance ) and 3dmark 2005 ( to guage video performance) and report back with the results.

I started the game from where it was choppy last night and now it seems to run fine. Could it be that my card overheats after playing for a while?

im downloading 2001 now. 2005 says its 283MB, does that sound right?

what? I mean the score you get after running it... not the amount of ram you have or whatever that 283mb refers to..

I'm playing it again right now, and it seems to be fine even after I raised the res to 800X600, but I think after playing for about an hour or so, it starts getting choppy and slows down drastically. could my video card be overheating or something?

might not be graphic related, might just be the game starting to access the harddrive as it is using too much ram possibly. But then again I dont have the game. Your 3dmark score seems fine (i get like 26k on what is effectively a 4100+ cpu and a X800XTPE)

Could it be Cool 'n' Quiet throttling down the CPU?
Check your CPU temps while you play/run something intensive and see what sort you are getting.
You can't monitor temps on a 9800Pro AFAIK, no temp probe (unless it has an R360 core, but you might need to remove the GPU heatsink to find that out).

i didn't realize it had no sensor. anyway, if you just run rthdribl and watch for artifacts and/or crashes it should indicate it is somewhere heat related. i don't imagine it would hurt anything as it should crash before any damage right?

Well I have Core Center running in the background when I play, but I have Cool 'n' Quiet disabled in the BIOS. I ran rthdribl and it hasn't crashed. I only ran it for a few minutes though. I will try it for about an hour which is around the same time I start having lockups with Doom 3.

what is your 3dmark 2003 score?

I was trying to run 3dmark 2005, but can't even run it without directx 9.0c. Then when I tried installing directX, it tells me it doesn't trust one of the cab files.

Wow, this score seems pretty low,

My 3dmark 2005 score was 2471.

That's because your card is 2002 tech running software testing 2005 tech. Your score won't be very high 😛
