Just what exactly does doom 3 require?

Does this happen in any other games? I don't think it's the 9800 Pro, those 3dmark scores are spot on with what you should score. You should be able to play at 10x7 with medium or maybe even high quality.

Nope just doom 3. all my other games run at high res with no problem.
 
It could be your hard drive. Doom 3 was running choppily for me, but I defragged and it ran alot better. Load times cut down too. Then again, I am running it on a 5400 RPM.
 
I have a 9800Pro on my other machine. My score in 3DMark 05 is close to yours, so there's no problem there.
Doom 3 runs fine on my 9800Pro at 1152x864 noAA/16AF High Quality, the FPS never goes below 40, and the card is not overclocked. I mean that your card is capable of running Doom 3 pretty well.
What's your OS? Have you installed all the windows updates? Do you have the latest motherboard drivers? (this is crucial), if not, head to nVidia's website and download the latest nForce package. And do you have any programs running in the background while you're playing? How many process do you have when and what's the memory usage when on desktop (idle)? Try to turn off everything (including anti virus) using task manager or whatever then play the game. Try even to update your mobo's BIOS since yours is more than a year old I assume.
Try playing other games and see if you get the same problem. Try to install the latest patch for Doom 3.
Usually, if a video card overheats, it displays artifacts or crashes, but it doesn't slow down.
Scan for virii and spyware.
Look at the Catalyst settings and see if something odd's turned on. Make sure AA/AF are turned off as well as vertical sync.
Check the CPU frequency in the BIOS and see if it's setup as it should be (some motherboards don't recognize the native CPU speed, so you should set it manually). Check your memory's frequency (DDR400) and timings and latencies. Check the CPU temperature and voltage and see if something's odd there.
What PSU do you have? Check the 12V and other lines' voltages and see if they're stable.
Finally, if all doesn't help, install a fresh windows and see if that helps.
That's all I can think of at the moment. It too early to give up 😉

edit: by the way, 1Gb of RAM is more than enough for Doom 3. So dont' worry about that. And try to reinstall Doom 3 if the problem's only in this game.

Wow Thanks!! I am trying to update everything now. Already ran a disk fragment as robertcloud suggested. I got the new nforce drivers from Nvidia. I just uninstalled norton internet security 2001, because I noticed that I couldn't download anything from the internet while that was running. (It works fine on my other computers so I don't know why this one is giving me issues.) I will now try to uninstall some of the bloat ware that ATI installed with its drivers.

As far as updating the BIOS. How risky is that? MSI has a live update feature that does everything for you, but is it still risky to do?
 
ATI drivers don't have any bloatware 😕

All it installs is the driver and the control panel that controls the driver, there's nothing else.

For some reason I have ATI hydra vision, ATI control panel, and ATI DVD decoder (I will need DVD decoder). I had Ati Catlyst control center too, but I already uninstalled it. I am reffering to the CD that came with the card, it had alot of "extras" on there.

The drivers I got from the internet (catylst 5.4) last night only had the drivers though, no bloatware there.
 
Ok after defragging the drive, getting updated nforce drivers, closing programs running in the background, and even completely uninstalling some programs, I am now able to run D3 very smoothly on 1024X768 at medium. Not sure how long the smoothness will last though, previously I dind't start noticing any problems until playing for about a half hour or so.
 
Im on a A64 W/1gb and a 9800 pro, 3dmark05 is about 2305. Doom 3 is running fine though load times are a little slow for me.
 
Glad to hear an improvement in Doom 3 (hopefully it won't slowdown after half an hour of playing).
I was wondering, do you uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones (for the video card and motherboard)? That's important to do as well. Because sometimes old drivers screw up the installation or cause some odd conflicts. And it is even recommended to use driver cleaner before installing the video card drivers, but it's not necessary.
As for the ATI extra thingies, you don't need any of those extra apps on the CD, you only need the drivers off ATI's website.
Updating BIOS can be risky through DOS, but the nice thing about MSI is you can update your BIOS in windows via their live update utility. I just updated mine a few days ago and it went very smooth. The only thing you should keep in mind is that you should have everything turned off in the background, just the live update running by itself, to avoid any possible crashes. I'd say it's not as risky as the DOS way, but it's not 100% safe too. Anyway, if something goes wrong, MSI has a recovery procedure that you can find at their website, I don't know if your mobo supports it though.

There could be a problem with the game files that causes a memory leak which adds up to make the game choppy after 30 minutes, that's why reinstalling the game might be a good idea if the problem presists.

Thanks! :thumbsup: I think im going to pick this up in the morning, I've been at this all day. At least when the game does run, it does so smoothly at 1024X768. I wasn't even able to get that res at first, so I am at least getting somewhere. I'll try running one more time before I go to bed with the updated doom patch. If it still locks up, I'll reinstall in the morning, cause I gotta get some sleep!! 🙂
