First of all...why were these kids so desperate to get ahold of all these drugs? Was it simply to make money? They didn't seem to be in any actual danger, aside from that of the drugs they were taking...

The old woman...she was on a form of speed, right? Is it possible to trip that hard off speed? o_O

I just don't see why people would do drugs like this if that's how they feel. I mean, that kids arm...holy crap.

They wanted to get money, so that they'd be set for life. . .

The whole point was to show how addictions screw them over.

I personally thought it was a great movie.

TV was the mother's real addiction.

It's easier for some people to fall into addictions than others. If you don't get it...that's probably good, because it won't happen to you. But don't assume that because you have an easy time of it, others are just lazy or stupid when they can't quit.

The mother was taking diet pills. She was hallucinating from starvation. The kids were both addicted to heroin and trying to make money by selling it (in order to buy more).

Edit: By the way, this is your kind of movie, EMO. Actually, this movie displays actual pain and suffering, so maybe not.

we all have addictions, it's all in how we control it. for some it's work, for others it's WoW, for others it's chopping up bodies, for others it's smack

Of all the movies I've seen , this is one I wish I never saw. (Ditto Blue Velvet.)

Utterly thoroughly depressing, fresh beautiful young lives lost to addiction.

I guess you can find a positive a drug put down message in it, but what a gross movie.
Now that's a true horror movie!.

i remember talking to a friend who loved this movie and thought it was the most disturbing thing shed ever seen. claimed "ric and i watched it, and were practically speechless for a long time after it was over"

so i thought, this must be awesome.

no.

it reminded me of some guys i went to high school with. i found most of the movie annoying to watch (i really hate the view from a camera mounted onto someone, meh) and only thought the ending was kinda-good.

i think the same guy directed pi, which also wasnt that good.

That's the thing about Aronofsky's films. Some people are put off by his direction, but IMO it's what makes his movies as great as they are.

Taste in movies and art in general are very subjective, I for one think The Matrix was awful and refuse to see any sequels.

No, it's not just addiction. I was talking to a friend of mine afterwards who was heavy into this stuff. He said the high was good and the trips were fun. Personally, that doesn't look fun to me, and I don't see how anyone could think it is.

I understand the movie, I just don't understand why people would let themselves get addicted to these things.

1) harry and tyrone wanted to sell drugs. so they got themselves that pound of pure. then they started 'sampling' it, selling it at the same time. they made profit. they started using more, the market dried up, the money ran out, they became desperate to find more.

2) sarah had an addiction to TV and to belong to something, to be wanted and attractive. she gets the telemarketing call, thinks it's something real, like she's gonna be on tv. she dreams of impressing all her friends and harry. to lose weight, she gets addicted to uppers and downers, then it just kind of falls apart from there...

3) marion wants to go into modeling or design clothing or some bullsh1t like that. once harry takes off, she gets desperate for money too, hence the one night stands and ass to ass.

I gathered that much from the movie. :) I guess the reason I didn't understand was because I can't relate.

The old lady was given a prescription of amphetamines...

There are alot of people who have tried heroine, cocaine, and various types of amphetamines that would relate to some of the stuff in that movie. The movie gives you a glimpse of hard core addiction.

It wasn't that TV was her addiction she was very lonely and had nothing to look forward to in her life, she longed for her old friends, to be admired, to be like one of the participants in the TV show. To have something thrilling in her life, as she had no life. That was what was so sad. When she started taking the weight loss pills, she had no idea it was amphetamines, nor that she was becoming addicted. She became psychotic...

It was an exaggerated depiction of what happens to an elderly person on these types meds...

loke, if you don't understand the lengths the four in the movie went to, then you just must live the most happy life where you don't run into the hardcore realities like this. you don't even have to have personally tried anything in the movie to truely understand it. i've never done the pills, the coke and heroin, or the whoring myself out. yet i found the movie to be excellent, depressing, trippy, moving, and bone-chilling.
