Just thinking last night...

Last night I was returning from a Jam Session with some friends and as we were walking back I saw a guy fall in the middle of the road with 2 friends and not get back up. We ran up to him to see if everything was ok, and when we got there, the guy was not only drunk (He was clearly under 21), but was clearly stoned as well. He couldn't even walk on his own.

As we continued on that night towards our respective dorms, a car just turned onto the sidewalk and took a "shortcut" to another road. The drivers also didn't seem to be 100% there (Thankfully it seemed they weren't completely wasted).

So we again continued on to the dorm. We stopped by one of the late express dining halls and naturally everywhere around there is packed. As I walked in line (I was wearing a "Got Jesus" T-Shirt at the time) and I got so many people asking me if I had Jesus (Which I thought was amusing haha) but then when I responded they get right into my face, with their alcohol smelling breath and I noticed a good amount of peoples' eyes were bloodshot, and just start getting real defensive. Most people I meet probably wouldn't hit me thankfully.

As I finished the walk back to the dorm, I just kind of stared off in disbelief at what a college campus has become. I'm not saying I want all people to be devout Christians (Or another religion), or stellar students, or incredibly respectful individuals (Though it would be nice), and I'm not saying I hate people who drink, it just occured to me how incredibly sad it has come to walk around campus and see all of this. It is enough that I refuse to let any of my girl friends walk back to their dorm alone- I walk them back.

I know this all seems pointless as "this is college" to a lot of people, and people embrace that, but I just felt that it is incredibly sad to see. I dunno...

(For those who don't know, a Jam Session is just a few of us who get together and sing Christian Rock/Contemporary music and people eventually just start joining in)

Female friends.... I'm not dating them. I kind of thought the space between the words would help people distinguish the difference.

I'm pretty sure it's been exactly like that for decades.
And jam sessions don't really have anything to do with contemporary music or christianity.

That doesn't make me feel any better. I don't want them punished or anything-- I just wish it didn't take something tragic for people (such as those) to wake up and figure out, "Hey Driving Drunk is stupid" or "Hey maybe I shouldn't smoke marijuana" or "Hey, maybe I shouldn't get trashed every single weekend out of my life". And then even when something tragic occurs, they wake up for a second, a day, a week, and then fall right back into it.

Us college students argue against these stereotypes, yet when I see that all I can think of is, how pitiful it is. I just wish there was some way things could change for the better without someone getting hurt first (or something to that affect).

-Kevin

Edit: I know about the Jam Sessions, I was more referring to the one that I went to and saying that is what we do at the ones I attend.

Probably depends on the campus. There was never anything like that where I went to school. Except for once a year, Winter Carnvial. :D

I'm at Virginia Tech. I love this school so much, and I have met so many people that are more incredible that I could have ever hoped to meet-- but the one thing I hate about the school is that it seems to be getting a reputation: Last year 2 Football players arrested for disorderly conduct, Backup QB in Alcohol Rehab, people claim it is becoming a party school. I wouldn't trade this school for any other, but I do wish that this trend would reverse.

It's college; when are these people supposed to do their partying?

It's somewhat the same situation with me, except in the HighSchool level. People think that they can't have a good time unless there is alcohol, or marijuana. People think their lives are so bad that they can't feel good about themselves unless they're intoxicated.

Well I'm having the time of my life and I'm not partying (I have been to parties, but I don't drink). So basically never (I know that is completely unrealistic, but eh). I have, from my friends who party all the time, never heard of a good thing happening at parties- It is always, "look at this dumb thing I did", or "did I call you and make an idiot out of myself last night". Or in some cases, "can you come and pick me up from jail", or "can you come and pick my car up"?

Look I don't want this to come off as a thread bashing people who party- I have plenty of good friends who I respect and care about who party. I just think that entire thing in general around a college is sad, and the extreme cases (Like some of the ones I saw the other night) are troubling as well as sad.

are you judging those people just because they let loose on the weekends and have a good time? Not everyone finds a group of people singing christian rock as the most entertaining of times, I sure as hell don't. Then again, I'm atheist. But even then, people who I know who are religious, and not just as simple as 'i believe in God', they like to let loose on weekends.
besides, I bet a good amount of those people who you say were drunk and/or stoned, probably have great grades too.

I have repaired automobiles(swapped engines FTW), written poems, made friends and lightened up my heart at parties. These are good things. You are welcome for the knowledge.

I wonder how this thread would have turned out had religion not been mentioned. Everyone seems ready to pounce at any slight mention of it.

People are idiots. The world is filled with them. But so long as they keep to themselves and don't kill someone, it shouldn't bother you.

Everyone has their own thing. The people you look down on might look at you and think you're retarded for calling your religious gatherings "Jam sessions." (I imagine it's to give a "hip" imagine to youthful followers)

If you see a drunk driver, call the police and report the plates, as that endangers not just their lives but innocent bystanders as well. Otherwise, who cares.

Perhaps if you read through my post you would read my response to your question. Here I'll quote it for you:

I'm not saying I want all people to be devout Christians (Or another religion), or stellar students, or incredibly respectful individuals (Though it would be nice), and I'm not saying I hate people who drink, it just occured to me how incredibly sad it has come to walk around campus and see all of this.

I would like for people to be Christians as it is my belief, but that is not influencing my decision at all. Sure there are Christians who drink (Certainly not the embodiment of the Christian faith, but thats another discussion), sure there are people who are fantastic people who aren't Christians who don't drink...I'm just making a blanket statement saying that the state of things on a college campus is sad.

Of course, this is ATOT. Religion had nothing to do with the discussion at all, I just happened to mention thats where I was prior to my walk back.

All I see is you being judgemental about the life choices of other people.

Ok.... so basically you don't judge the person who was partying and driving drunk, just like the people I described, who ran down acemcmac? Same exact thing.

People are idiots. The world is filled with them. But so long as they keep to themselves and don't kill someone, it shouldn't bother you.

Again if you read my post I, am not looking down on these people. I merely said I was saddened by this- its nothing new, its just the entirety of it really just hit me.

As for the Jam Session thing, I don't think it is to give a "hip" appearance- I think it is merely just a blanket statement referring to a gathering where you sing music. I couldn't care less if it were or weren't called a Jam Session.

no, it's how he is being judgemental of others because they don't practice the same things he does and have different definitions for the word fun. that's what everyone is replying about. very few replies have really gone as far as just bashing the religiousness.

Of course. That's the ONLY possible interpretation of what he said. Let's all get drunk and run over old ladies!
